Memorial Day is a tough one for me.

On Memorial Day I will be raising a glass to members of the services who gave their country everything. I’ll also be celebrating the lives of the team I lost because I know they were called to the service. They were called to the events that changed our lives in what I went through, the passing of a team/friends, our families.
In this, it’d be easy to say “screw it” and eat whatever, drink whatever, and lose oneself but I remember that I would not be honoring myself and I certainly wouldn’t be honoring their memories by giving into pity or self-destructive behavior. It would be an excuse.
So I’ll raise that glass and take a sip. I’ll have a lovely meal and I won’t overdo. Making the best of the life I was granted and not derailing. I’ll make the best of the life I was granted. I’ll remember the ultimate sacrifices of the men and women before my time, during my time, and praying for the safety of our current armed forces.

Itsy, have you ever shared here what happened to you? I’ve read and heard you say many surgeries, etc., but asa result of what? Sorry if I’m prying, just curious to hear your story. You don’t have to share though if I’m crossing the line. You have my respect. ❤️🙏

Thank you Shir and Wifey!😊 PSA: Stop reading unless you’re prepared for an overshare. But.. This WAS and still IS part of my weight journey, mental and physical health journey, and life journey. I don’t use it as an excuse or a poor me deal. To be honest, I don’t want anyone to say their sorry for what I went through. It’s just a thing that happened that I had to work to overcome. And yes, events like these DO impact your health in every aspect. One event had a ripple effect. Throw a pebble into a lake. It’s exactly the same. One pebble (moment) caused other areas of the lake (life) to be disrupted. Wifey- It’s fine you asked. I worked long and hard to get to a place where I can talk about things I remember. The long and short of it. We were in the Gulf, on ship. I was in Damage Control (think firefighter) and lead in our shop. We were asked by our ship to do some work on a field base setting up firefighting equipment and en route we took fire. Most of my shop were hit and passed away. I was hit by gun shot to the left shoulder and then physically attacked. Most of my memory of it are flashes (thankfully). I was left to die but was found by an LT and his unit traveling back to the base. 2 others survived from gun wounds. We lost 6 from my shop. Now I’m medically retired and have been for 20 years. (I’m only 42)

I kinda had to laugh at my own post. My story is like a really lame movie. I would want a refund from the theater, if I saw it. 😂 Yes, I sure in heck can giggle at things now. Where I was and where I am are a lifetime away from each other. God saw me through.

God sure did! His plans for you are great!! Thank you for the details. Our neighbor is a firefighter in the military. This has caused me to pray for him more. ❤️🙏

You are an amazing woman. Thank you for sharing your story. My older son was in the air force and was in Desert Storm, but never near the front lines, and came home safely. I pray every day for our young people out in harm's way.
