So I am following Atkins and am at the end of my first week. I lost 5lbs this week which is good.

I am having constipation and have been using Metamucil to help. Has anyone else had this issue and used fiber to help combat it? Did it affect your weight loss??

Make sure you eat all your veggies every day! Also make sure you drink a lot of water. I tend to get constipated easily but didn't have trouble when I started Atkins because I ate all the veggies I was supposed to. Good luck!

I agree with the above post... Water is VITAL as well as the green veggies...and I have had almost no issue at all in 14 months...

have you tried a MIM (muffin in a minute)? they're made with milled flax seed that is pure fiber. there are several posts on here about them and here's a link from Atkins website

http://www.atkins.com/Program/Phase1/WhatYouCanEatinthisPhase/AllAboutMIMs.aspx

my favorite is to follow the basic recipe but skip the cinnamon & splenda and add garlic & onion powder & parmesan cheese. then slice into about 12 pieces and toast. and definitely drink lots of water.

perhaps someone has shared this idea already (I've not read all the previous poster's comments - so sorry if I'm being repetitive) but green tea is a wonderful, natural remedy for constipation -- and packed with wonderful antioxidants so it is great for you.

of course. I think they have almost no net carbs, depending on how you fix it.

Evie, I am on Cumadin so I am only allowed so much leafy greens a day so I can't add green tea unfortunately. But thanks for the idea.

There is a tea called Smooth Move that may help or you can try some Milk of Mag that would be available over the counter. Usually after a few weeks the constipation won't be an issue. Your body just has to adjust. The other thing is that with such a decrease in carbs, you won't do as much.

Don't mean to be so 'direct' - but - you're not likely to go as often as you did prior to Atkins! Depending on how much Meat/Protein I eat...will depend on how much or how often I will go. And yes Fiber does help. I have on rare occasion taken one or two Metamucil caplets in a day, and within a day or two, I have been able to go again. But to be honest I typically only go every other or every third/fourth day. When I do go it's a healthy amount, no straining or problems, etc... so after reading about it online... I just never let it bother me. (and yes, the daily water makes a huge difference along w/ the natural fiber.) Mim's are allowed in Induction (lots of Induction Friendly recipes for those here on this site.) Good luck.
Live, Love, Laugh ...make each day memorable and enjoy the journey.

I would not use metamucil because it causes "bulk" and thus increasing problems in some but switch over to a generic stool softner. Milk of Mag and Smooth move are good to get things moving but you can't use them too much because you will become "bowel dependent". Stool softners are fine with Coumadin and are not bowel dependent.

Hi Dana..I am on week 3 of induction. Had the same problem as you..and I have found a solution. I eat Spinach soup (actually i work abroad and here you find Egyptian Spinach- molokhea) But i guess you can try regular spinach. Take chopped spinach, garlic, corriander and you can add pieces of chicken. Before serving ad a big dollop of butter. Wonderful dinner and it has a laxative effect every time. Try it and see if it works for you?

I had the same problem when I first started. Drinking more water, and eating more veggies helped me. When it didn't I ate a MIM, and that ALWAYS works.

Dana, I had the same problem... and it was really bad. I started adding in the MIMs and that has helped. I have found eating avocado actually helps me more, however!

I have always taken a daily probiotic, at least for the last couple years, and no matter how my diet changes, through meat fasts to crazy unhealthy eating in college, I have never since had any GI issues like constipation Not sure if it works so great for everyone else but I am a firm believer that it works. I (despite being a nurse) hate the idea of taking medication, but I think of it as more of a supplement take it along with my prenatal vitamin (not pregnant or trying to be, but a woman of child bearing age, so doc says it is a good idea) and fish oil. Healthiest I have ever been!
