How can a person can gain 3 lbs in two days! I know I didn't exercise this weekend but come on...3 lbs?! I know weight can go up and down a few ounces everyday but I didn't think it could go up a few pounds! Especially since I didn't eat bad.

Any ideas as to how 3 lbs in 2 days is possible?

If your current weight is correct, 3 lbs is less than 2% of your body weight. It could be water, it could be what you ate or drank, it could be TOM (if you are a woman), or what you wore when you weighed yourself. If you are eating well, don't worry about it, just keep the course. My own weight can fluctuate up to 3 lbs within a day!

Also, don't be obsessed with the number on the scale. If your clothes fit well/better, if you have more energy and feel better in general, then you are doing great!

Thanks mdep1229! It makes me feel a whole lot better to know that this is normal and happens to others.

My own weight fluctuates 3-5 pound on any given day. You cannot gain 3 pounds of fat (or muscle) in 2 days, so don't worry about it. It's just water. Lots of things can affect this, but the biggest culprits I've found for a quick increase are eating high sodium or not drinking enough water. Make sure you keep yourself hydrated and stay away from salty food and it should go back down quickly.

From Friday to today, I gained just over 6! I had a great weekend, enjoyed myself with food and liquor, and today its back to the grindstone. I know its a lot of water weight, and I guarentee you that by tomorrow morning, it will be down at least 4 pounds. Everyone is different though - I know people who can gain and lose 5-10 pounds every week, its just their body. Good luck, and get back to the gym!

Oh, yeah, it does happen!! It happens to me all the time - but over the period of 2 months I've lost 11 lbs. Slow, maybe. . .I've done it fast before. Now I just want to do it permanent! <G>!

My weight fluctuates constantly by about 4 pounds. A strange thing seems to happen to me that I can predict my next weigh in by almost a week. I seem to hit that number once usually about 5 days before it seems to stick. It's almost like my body saying... Hey good work! If you keep it up next week you will weight _____.

I have this strange ability to know almost exactly what my weight is before I get on the scale. I can go weeks without weighing myself and be within one pound. Maybe I should work in a carnival!

A good thing to remember, is weight is also a science thing. The earth has a fluctuating gravity. This means on certain days it pulls stronger than others. It won't account for much alteration, but it can impact your weight slightly. That mixed with water weight and other influences at the particular time you weigh yourself in the day could be, (I'm no doctor, so this is strictly opinion) what cause that day to day change. I would agree with mdep, it's more in how you feel. If your clothes fit better, and you feel better, then the scale is just a number.

I hope you are right. I've been beating myself up and miserable all morning because after one weekend of partying with family I'm up 4 lbs, which is half of what I have lost so far. It was very discouraging and makes me want to quit but I'm trying hard not to.

Did you eat salty things this weekend? If so, that probably explains it.

Don't take the scale so seriously! Body weight fluctuates anywhere from 1-3 lbs between morning and night on a daily basis - that's why I weigh myself only every so many days just to make sure there's no serious weight gain outside of the daily ups-and-downs.

Same here I was pissed last Monday when I saw I was back over 190 (4 pounds gain in a week) but I quickly realized it was from all the salt I had at the super bowl party and I was just retaining water. A week later and I'm down almost 3 pounds from the weight 2 weeks ago. The water retention thing is crazy.
