I started Atkins last Tuesday (Jan 11th) and haven’t lost any weight. I have been following the diet 100% and working out (Zumba Cardio Party or 35 mins on Elliptical) 5 times a week. I definitely thought I would be losing some weight, but nope I’m still the same. Additionally, I have been extremely constipated. Is this normal?? I have even been taking fiber supplements to help but I have not seen much improvement. Does anyone have suggestions about this problem and my slow weight loss? Thanks for your help!!

I remember reading in the book that you should not work out for the first 2 weeks on Atkins...(can't remember the exact reason why...but it might be because your body is adjustng to ketosis). Also, make sure you are drinking plenty of water...and eating all your veggies. If I'm not mistaken...15 of your 20 carbs during induction need to come from veggies. Not sure if you have an account on Facebook, but they have a great Atkins group there...with great recipes for induction, and wonderful support. Smile

Looks like your drinking a lot of coffee with half and half, now don't get me wrong I am the queen of drinking an entire pot of coffee by myself, but I would try using heavy cream instead. Also you may be like me and 20 net carbs are too much, you may be metabolically resistant. Try dropping 5 net carbs lower, drink two cups of broth (helps with constipation also) one in the morning one in the evening. And drink drink drink lots of water. Hope I can help!

I take pysllium husks caplets i take 5 a day if needed. In the older versions of atkins i talks about it. I it also comes in powder, but i could not stomache it. i am not sure if that is the fiber you are taking. i hope your condition improves.

i have the same problem with constipation. the first week was really bad so i took benefiber 2 times a day and then i had a movement or two and haven't had one since. it's been like 6 days already. i had weight gain this week but i know i was retaining water cuz from one day to the other all that weight was gone plus more. i am drinking a lot of water, a lot. I'm drinking iced tea and hot tea throughout the day. usually coffee makes me go, but seems to do nothing while on this diet. i think today i will take something strong to make my stomach move.

be patient with the weight loss. it is true, some of us are metabolic resistant. our bodies are so smart that they tend to even fight us in the fight to lose weight especially during the first few weeks.

exercise is not necessary according to atkins, but it's good for you. i think if i didn't do some exercise i'd feel a little sluggish at times. i walked 50 minutes last night on the threadmill, i hadn't done that since last friday. i was having trouble sleeping and waking up in the morning and worse still staying up. i slept like a baby and i'm up early today.

also, we have to be careful what fiber supplements we take as some have carbs. benefiber is 3 carbs/serving, but no sugar cuz it's the plain stuff, however fiber doesn't count towards net carbs. Just be careful with the flavored stuff.

I take Miralax every day. It's a powder you mix in any beverage. No taste, no calories, no carbs. It's expensive (I buy the store brand at Sams Club) but well worth it. I always had a constipation problem but this way of eating makes it so much worse. Is keeps me regular and if it works too good then I just skip a dose for a couple of days. Hope this helps.

Isn't the Atkins diet the one were you cut all the carbs??? If your on that I would recommend that you quit. That is one of the worst diet plans that you can go on. I have done it before it sucks. And if your just eating lots of protein then your not going to really go Ummm.. well you know. Theres is nothing there to come out. You dont get any fiber on that diet. Unless you take it in pill form and even then its just going to give you the runs.....yuck. The best diet that i have herd of that gives you a bit of everything you need is The American Heart Association diet. Thats the one that I use with a little bit of my own in there too. Its has work well for me lost 71 pounds doing that and kept it off..........except for those 10 at Christmas. But that was just me not the diet. Anyway I hope i helped in some way. Best of luck no matter what you do. Smile

No fiber? Hello, she has over 20g of fiber each day in the last two days, and that's more than the "average American" gets in a day. (The recommendation is 25g to 35g a day based on a 2000-calorie diet; most Americans get less than 15g).

Bulk-forming laxatives, especially psyllium (not to be confused with stimulant laxatives), are considered "bowel normalizers". Not only it will not cause diarrhea, it is sometimes used to treat mild diarrhea.

I would suggest trying all the methods others have suggested: fiber supplements, lots of water, some mild exercise in the morning (sometimes exercise helps to stimulate your intestines and get things moving), hot coffee/tea, etc. And while you need to be aware of the carbs in fiber supplements, because you cannot digest and absorb fiber, the amount of net carbs is usually quite a bit less.

Good luck and hope you get this problem taken care of soon!

Skinny, honey - You must have never done it correctly.

My doctor recommended the diet to me. I've never felt better or been happier in my life.

Check and see what I eat. I bet I eat more than you and you can see by me weight tracker that I've been rather successful.

Don't poo-poo something until you have all the proper facts.

The NEW version of Atkins has you eating more veggies than you can ever imagine. If you get the proper 12-15net carbs of them per day - You shouldn't have 'bathroom' issues. Watch how many of the bars & shakes you consume - don't get lazy and use them as a crutch. Keep those fiber g's up to 20 or higher per day!

I did it right but when I did it I was 14 which was.....9 years ago. And I felt like shit on it. I see now that you say that the diet has changed. Which is good because it wasn't healthy then. I still don't think it is. and that is MY opinion.

I have researched for the last 2 weeks finding something that works. This New Atkins Book gives you everything you need. Can't go in to detail because I just started it since this is the one that appealed to me the most we'll see. I was a bit concerned about the fiber but I do get fiber so good luck to everybody.

No, sometimes I use a cross-bow and shoot them. Bad Grin

Never for a moment got excited, just presenting the facts in a logical manner. I cannot stand Atkins myself. Tried a couple times, always ended up being miserable. I am, however, not narcissistic enough to think that simply because it does not work for me, it cannot be a good way of eating for others.

I know what I am doing to myself. I listen to my body. It has adjusted to the smaller portions, I am not hungry, I feel more energetic, my clothes fit better - wore a pair of size 2 trousers to work yesterday and they were not tight at all!

LMAO Mdep. Personally I didn't think you bit anyone's head off.

The first time I tried Atkins...it made me incredibly cranky cutting out carbs...this time around...finding it so much better...and I find that I feel better since I'm not bogged down with pasta and rice and other carbs. But as you say...it may not work for one person but works for another.

I am doing my own modified version of Atkins. I'm reading all these posts and a lot of people have a lot of opinions, but not a lot to support it. I have been reading studies that show the low carb lifestyle actually helps to lower cholesterol, help control diabetes and for me has almost eliminated my constant reflux.
Atkins style is something you have to adjust to- we poison ourselves for so long that we are addicted to that poison. Yes it's hard to make the initial adjustment. For me the key was balance. You cannot ingest so much meat and not balance your fiber intake. This website has such awesome resources, I found low carb high fiber foods that really kept me on track. You also have to be willing to listen to your body. It is totally unreasonable to think that you will follow a written diet plan and never deviate from it. We have to.
I have been doing this for over 6 months now and so far have lost 52 lbs. Once you get used to it and tweek it for your own personal needs, it is an exceptionally successful diet tool.

Skinny, I read your link, and big surprise it bashes Atkins in favor of THEIR own agenda, it promotes a different diet, so of course it's going to ridicule it's biggest competitor. Be careful where you get your info. Most tf us have researched the health pros and cons thoroughly before starting this way of life, because it's NOT just a diet it's a way to change behaviors that you've struggled with your whole life! Not to mention that a lot of people get the induction phase confused with the whole plan.

I'm sorry that you weren't successful with it in the past, I hope that your new plan will work for you.
As for your age when you did Atkins, honey I wouldn't recommend dieting at that age, your body is going through massive changes during that time, and weight fluctuates tremendously for many girls, but after a couple of years it becomes much easier to regulate.

As for the constipation, the most important, beneficial thing you can do is to eat your veggies!
