Last night I ordered a Chicken Thai Salad and it was really good until I tasted the cilantro... Oh YUCK!! it tasted like soapy metal. It ruined the entire salad, and I think possibly ruined my appetite for the entire day. I ate it over 12 hours ago and still have that bitter taste in my mouth.
I then learned that some people taste the soapy taste with the cilantro and hate it... while others don't think it taste like soap at all..and they love it.
Does anyone else taste the soap when they eat something with cilantro?

Cilantro distaste is genetic.

Check this link out Amy. I happen to love it Smile

I read an article about cilantro hate Smile I can't recall everything about it, but it suggested that some people have a gene or marker that makes them perceive cilantro as tasting soapy and smelling bad. I happen to love it while my sister thinks it tastes like dish soap. I love the smell, she hates that too. Smile

I love cilantro, the smell and the taste. I believe that almost all foods would taste better with cilantro. Smile

I love cilantro so much, I'd marry it! Razz

My mom hates it. Maybe it skips a generation.

I think it tastes metallic and awful, and most of my family can't stand the smell.

I love it.
Things that make you go Hmmm....

. If you ate pasta and antipasta would you still be hungry?
. If one synchronized swimmer drowns. Do the rest have to drown too?
. If space is a vacuum, who changes the bag?
. What is another word for Thesaurus?
. Is there an imaginary cure for hypochondria?

Just wondering....

I made salsa with fresh cilantro, and HATE HATE HATED it, so I figured I was a hater. Then some time later, I found out cilantro is ground coriander. Well, that I like, and use. I'm thinking next recipe that calls for cilantro, I should use the ground version; I guess you get a more subtle taste from that, instead of a big clump on your tongue.

Cilantro isn't quite the same as ground coriander although they do come from the same plant. Cilantro is the leaf and coriander is the dried fruit. I cannot stand Cilantro, I wonder if it has anything to do with my being a super-taster, but I love coriander. Two completely different tastes to me.

I can't imagine pico d' gallo, salsa or queso dip without cilantro. I used to hate the stuff when I was younger but over the years I've grown to really like what it does for some foods.

About coriander, I thought it was the seed of the cilantro plant which I think makes it a spice, where the cilantro leaf is considered an herb.

I love it. There is a grocery store chain here in the south called Harris Teeter. They an absolutely awesome baby herb salad mix. all of the usual suspects are in it...arugula, spinach, chard, etc...then they thrown in fresh dill, cilantro, basil, oregano.....

I buy a tub every week and use that as the greens for lunch wraps. Smile

Love it. I get a little annoyed when I order salsa and it comes out without cilantro. They should just call it "chopped tomato dip" if they're going to leave it out.

I love it. I have indian for lunch today, liberally covered in cilantro. Here in NZ its called both cilantro and coriander. Ground coriander is the seeds ground up. It's an easy-to-grow garden herb.
