Hello Everyone,

This is my first post. I have just gotten back on the Atkins program. I had success in the past but gave in to carb cravings and lost my way. I am back on the program and having success again, but am suffering from severe leg cramps. Any suggestions???

Are you taking a potassium supplement? Also try drinking some full sodium broth.

Short term, how about some ice and maybe Midol or Tylenol?

Here is what WebMD has to say about cramps:

Two things I think you might consider trying, drinking more water and getting more magnesium, potassium or calcium. You know what's a great source? Milk.

Now I'm not a doctor, but I think it's difficult to go wrong with take two asprin and call me in the morning, and while you are at it drink some milk.

Oh dear, I see Atkins is not high on milk. I knew there was a reason I wasn't doing it. How about nuts?

this may sound crazy, but buy a bar of Dove soap, and put it in the bed down by your legs.... this has long time been a relief for people with ''kicking leg syndrome''... cheap and easy and it works!

p.s. the soap has magnesia phosphate which is a known cure for cramps, so taking an extra magnesium supplement b/4 bed will also help.

I also heard that thing about the soap before. I get leg cramps all the time so maybe I'll try that. Forgot all about it until I just read mummydee's post. (thanks!). I take a supplement that is just calcium, magnesium & potassium all in one. I get it at Sam's Club. Plus my regular vitams too.

you can buy potassium supplements - I take 2 each day when I have problems with leg cramps. You don't want to take too many - but see if 1 or 2 will help the cramps

I was going to comment about this in my journal, I have had "restless Leg Syndrome" for over 20 years, before it even had a name, (kicking leg syndrome) is a good name cause thats what I had to do, kick and shake my legs for hours and hours. Found a supplement, called Leg Cramps, they have it at walmart here (and if they have it here on my small island you can get it anywhere) and that works great. But, I also discovered that it went away (or so I thought) for the most part about 2 years ago. I now discovered I only get it when i walk or exercise, it came back a couple of weeks ago when I started walking, and the only day I didnt have a problem was saturday, the day I did not walk or exercise!!!!!!

It could also be calcium deficiency! I used to get those horrible calf muscle cramps that woke me up at night, till my doctor told me I need more calcium in my diet. It's a horrible pain, usually if you get up and stand on that leg, it'll go away faster. But to avoid it all together, drink more milk or get some calcium pills Smile
