Hi all! I'm new to site. I started reducing calorie intake and exercising back in February. I was 147 lbs and am down to about 135 which I am pretty happy about - good days and bad of course. I'd like to lose another 8 or so ideally. I'm 5'3" and 42. Here's my question - I've just started to go low carb (have quickly looked at Atkins net carb food list). I'm eating at the very most 1500 calories a day. Would low carb matter with that calorie intake and moderate exercise? Would I see better results with low carbs?

Low carb has never worked for me, I can never eat enough to be fully satisfied! I have been on a 50% carb, 25% protein, 25% fat diet & it has worked wonders! I started at 135 lbs & am now about 116

I may not be the best person to answer your question..but I can give you my 2 cents Smile. I think with any calorie limit, you need to balance your carb, protein, and fats. They all play a part in helping you stay full until your next meal. I'm not an Atkins dieter, so I don't know what you mean by 'low' carb, but I eat about 200 G of carbs per day (50 per meal). Carbs(along with fats and proteins) helps me stay full for about 4 hours until my next meal. So in short, keep it balanced, even if you are lowering your calorie intake. Hope that helps a little.

For myself- I agree with Brooke's numbers, except I eat around 1500 calories per day.

I eat 1500 cals a day, 1600 cals on workout days. My ratio is about 30% protein, 35%carbs, 35% fat, it varies daily, but thats what has been working for me and I feel good.

Low carbing is anything under 150g of carbs a day. I have been avoiding white flour (though I ate pita bread today) and white sugar, I give preference to complex carbs. It is working for me Smile I was on Atkins, but I had no energy to get out of bed, after I changed, I am working out everyday and losing faster.

Bottom line: experiment with your body, give it 2 weeks then change if you see no results Smile It is different for every person.

If you replace those carbs with protein, than I would say yes you will see better results. It takes more calories to digest protein than carbs so your net calorie intake would be lower, not to mention the muscle support aspects of protein.

Thanks everyone. That is very helpful. It's only been 5 days but I have to say I feel much less energetic. However - it could be the weather - really hot in Toronto right now. I don't think the weather would make me feel quite like this though. Does it take some time for body to adjust or is this how most people feel on low carb diet all the time?

Yes it does take a while for your body to adjust to using protein for its energy source. Stick with it! You may want to incorporate a day of carbs every week or two to help with hormones though!

Good luck!

My sister taught me to do 30 protein, 30 fat and 40 carb so when you are ready to take it a step higher, this might work good for you. It works excellent for me. Was 208 now I am 180 and still going.....

I eat about 1500 - 1600 cals a day. If I go over 1600 its because I drink an extra protein shake if I feel I didnt have enough protein that day.

I started at about 1800 - 2000 kcals a day (I'm 380 lbs so Im a big guy, 2000 kcals for my size is still low IMO). SO I really hope to see some more movement in the lbs lost category. I'm looking to drop 4 - 5 lbs a week.
