Olive oil is in mine, but I just read yesterday that Canola is just as good. So, if you can only have one oil in your pantry, which would it be?

(I suppose I can have 2 oils, but I normally only have one.)

I have EV olive now but I'm not too big on them or anything. I just got the stuff that I thought was best for me to cook with occasionally.

I love olive oil! I might try canola though, have stayed away from it because everyone said it was "bad" for the longest time. lol

I have two kinds of one, if that counts?! I use Extra Virgin Olive Oil for dressings/sauces and Extra Light Olive Oil for cooking.

Safflower oil is one I use pretty frequently. Good for asian style cooking. It's pretty much flavorless.

I forgot, I do have a little sesame oil, but I use it very sparingly. And, I think I always burn it anyway. I love the way it smells, but it doesn't flavor my food the way it smells.

Sooki, that's how I use sesame oil too. Just a tiny bit. You really don't need a pool of oil for a stir fry anyway. If it's not quite enough for the pan, I'll supplement with a spritz of olive oil.

EVOO, canola & sesame (though my mom is the only one that uses the sesame for her asian cooking). I use Pam cooking spray as often as possible to not add fat & calories, but when I can't I go for the EVOO simply b/c it's in a more accessible place than the canola & the canola is a jug size that's a pain in the butt to pour, lol.

Hmm. If only one then definitely olive. But I use cold-pressed non-GMO canola too. Cold-pressed is important with canola. Expensive but worth ith. Otherwise it can be rancid--something that is disguised by the nasty chemical method of oil extraction. Most canola oils are actually deodorized to mask bad smells. Non cold-pressed canola has been shown in tests to deplete the body of Vit E. There are other controversies, too.

I also use a little sesame to finish some asian-flavored dishes but just at the end--or maybe in a marinade. It does burn with high heat (has a low smoke point) so best to add at the end. I have others (avocado, coconut) but I hardly use them.
Whether you think you can, or you think you can't--you're right.

And, off topic here, but I LOVE ME SOME BEETS, TOO!

We did a CSA farm share last year, and the beets were my favorite. I always thought I only liked picked beets, but I was wrong. Beets are awesome. Too bad my kids don't love them.

Oh yeah, I also use Sesame Seed Oil for stir fry, adds a nice flavor and you don't need much.

Just a note to people with a PAM happy trigger finger. It's not fat free! A 1-second spray has about 1 gram of fat and 7 calories. Still better than a glob of butter or tablespoon of oil, but if your spraying your pans liberally you may be adding uncounted fat and calories. Just be aware!

Great thread.

I like coconuts!

I use Spectrum Expeller Pressed Organic Coconut Oil. I'm not a big oil user but I sometimes make grilled cheese and bacon sandwiches with 2 slices of center cut bacon, 2% swiss, light laughing cow cheese spread, and village hearth light Italian bread. I spread my coconut oil on the bread before I grill it. It's amazing, I love this sandwich.

This oil does NOT smell or taste like coconuts.

Are you dressed like Peter Pan in your profile picture? I'm not complaining since I'm dressed like a strawberry!

Is coconut oil tasteless?

Coconut oil is almost all saturated fat though. Isn't the consensus still that saturated fat is bad for us? I know we need SOME, but any idea where "some" becomes "too much"?

Joanna, ha! I was just forming a question about cooking with shea butter (jiggawhat?) until I finished reading. Laughing

I work for a company that makes food (the processed kind...I know, bad! But, I still love my job!) and I know that within the last 5 years there was a big push to go trans fat free, and we use a lot of coconut oil based products instead of soy oil products to accomplish that.

Sesame, chilli, canola, ev. I have to admit I use drippings a lot for cooking. I know it is so bad, but good Mexican/Ukrainian cooking is how I was raised, I am a unique combo and nothing is as good. I just try and limit the times a week I make something ethnic.
