So I've been taking benefiber (the kind that dissolves completely in water) for the last few weeks in an effort to promote *regularity*. I've also been eating activia yogurt daily as part of a challenge and found that it is not working. In fact, it has been having the opposite effect.

Silly me. I thought that any fiber would do, but now I find out that it is the insoluble fiber that will promote *regularity*, but the soluble fiber which dissolves completely in water is actually for preventing loose stools.

So now I am on a mission to find insoluble fiber and start eating/taking that. Anybody have any good sources?

Apples, black beans, pretty much any vegetable or fruit, oatmeal, etc. Fiber is great for "regularity" (I love that term, it is very funny!)Without being too gross, a diet with a lot of fruit and vegetables has made mornings much nicer than my previous diet of greasy salty badness Smile

I recommend "Super Colon Blow" cereal. It would take eating 2,500,000 bowls of bran cereal to equal one bowl of Super Colon Blow.

If you can't find this, Fiber One cereal might do the trick.

OK guys, I've been doing the same except taking metamucil capsules and eating activia. However, I'm "regular", is that proof enough? Sounds stupid, I know but I want to make sure I'm doing this right.

It probably works - if you think "regular" is once a year.

I'd always go with trying to get your fiber (or anything else) from real food if you can. You can separate the fiber from it's original plant substance, but there are other benefits to eating the plant that you miss when you do this.

But what works, works! No need to second guess yourself too much Smile

The muffins we make on atkins are filled with flax meal and our delicious, they work great and can be used by anyone. Easy to make and really good especially if you add pumpkin even more fibre.

I bought some Flaxseed. I was surprised at the calorie content, 180 for 3 tablespoons. I use one tablespoon over yogurt or something like that. That actually might be good in a salad too. Give some texture too it, or crunch or whatever.

One of the best sources is Psyllium. It is super cheap. You can stir it into yogurt or a shake or sprinkle it on something. A little each day is all you need if you aren't getting it from your food. K8yk is bang on when she says that you should try to get it from regular food sources but it is fine to supplement.

From Wikipedia:
Psyllium is mainly used as a dietary fiber, which is not absorbed by the small intestine. The purely mechanical action of psyllium mucilage absorbs excess water while stimulating normal bowel elimination. Although its main use has been as a laxative, it is more appropriately termed a true dietary fiber and as such can help reduce the symptoms of both constipation and mild diarrhea.

Lenny, Can you post a recipe? I tried to find one on here and only found the 2 minute muffin.

No one has brought this up yet, so...

All that supplemental fiber is going to turn into a brick if you're not drinking enough water. Try drinking more water and see if that solves your problems.

A nutritionist also told me that taking fiber such as metamucil helps to supress the appetite! You do definitly need to drink alot of water with it though.

Ok, I have been through this! I was told the following:

drink plenty of water (I drink 64 -100 oz a day)
exercise ( I walk everyday for an hour, plus was doing pilates and weights)
eat veggies (I was eating 1/2 plate of veggies for every meal)
eat plenty of fiber rich foods (I get in excess of 35g of fiber a day)

What happened? I went from "going" every morning before I changed my bad eating habits to every few days and that was "difficult". Even with all the walking, pilates, veggies, water water water, etc, I still wasn't anywhere near regular. The doctor told me it was fine, but I constantly feel like I need to "go" but can't. THEN a friend told me it has to with me cutting back on those bad carbs! I don't know if that is true, but after this past week of eating bad carbs, I got real regular lol!

One thing I did find that helps is to drink coffee in the morning to "relax" things and it seems to work within about 10-15 minutes.

Since I am pregnant now (no the problem isn't pregnancy related since I have been experiencing it way before I got pregnant), the doctor has given me the ok to take colace for a stool softener and pericolace for a laxative stimulant. Hope something here helps you.

I've noticed an improvement - Here's what I did...

I stopped taking water soluble fiber - it sucks all the water out of your intestines - counter productive if you ask me. I increased my naturally occuring fiber by eating one more serving of whole grains, such as fiber one Cereal, whole wheat tortillas or wraps, multigrain english muffins, etc. I've also been trying to fit in some high fiber beans. I increased my water by at least 2 cups per day. I increased my fat intake slightly.

I've done these things for about a week now and have seen a notable improvement in my digestive situation. Wink

If you want a lot of non-supplemental fiber, you can eat a can of black beans (or boil the dried ones if you have time). A can of black beans (1 3/4 cup) has about 25+ grams of fiber.
