Question?? I have been looking at the South Beach cookbooks and noticed that some of the recipes are fairly high to very high in calories. Are my other dieting friends taking calories into account for meals or strictly concerned with foods that are south beach friendly??

You may have noticed that I count calories and enter them into my journal every single day. I consider this practice to be as important, if not more important, than SBD itself (insofar as losing weight is concerned). SBD emphasizes that while it is not necessary to count calories, it is important to keep an eye on ones overall intake of food. Counting and recording calories puts you in complete control of that aspect of your diet, and eliminates the possibility of unknowingly overeating, which is really quite easy to do. However, having said that, I recognize that calorie counting is not for everyone...

I have been on SBD for 6 months. I have concentrated on SBD friendly foods and not calorie counting and I have lost 27.5 pounds.

i do not count calories...however i do watch portion control...if i go overboard in one area i will cut back in another to balance and realize that sometimes i am making a decision that will slow down my progress...it really is a choice of what works best for you

I try to just stick to what the daily allowance is on some of the foods. Lean protein is unlimited but most other things like fats/oils, dairy, nuts, etc. do have daily limits and amounts. Lately I've gone overboard on nuts and peanut butter and the result is high calories and no weight loss this week so far. So mostly pay attention to the allowed amounts of "some" foods. It should work out okay
I agree that most of us try to watch the calories by making better choices per day.
Hang in there, this is a great diet! tthe only one I've been able to stick!

I tend to agree with the last few posts. I do not count calories but I have noticed that my calorie intake has decreased considerably since I started SB again. I had it in my head that I could not do SB and tried WW and SparkPeople.com and I could never get a handle on my calories while feeling satisfied. I was obsessed with food on WW and just discouraged when counting calories. Now that I am committed to SB way of life I do not worry about calories and remain focused on eating the right foods in the right amounts.

I do keep up with calories. I did some research on diets and read several articles that say no matter what diet, the bottom line is still more calories burned than taken in to have weight loss. In order to lose just one pound of stored fat we need to burn off 3500 extra calories.

I think you can do SBD without counting calories as long as you follow all the rules of portion control, eat only until full, etc. I have consistently lost weight every week and have learned a lot by keeping a diet AND exercise calendar. You could always try it both ways and see which works best for you.

Here's a good calculator that will help you know how many calories you need to maintain/lose. I usually stick to a limit of 1200 calories most days. This site actually says *Calorie cycling provides same amount of calories per week, but 'tricks' your body by constantly changing daily calories. This helps to prevent or break plateaus.
