A big tip of mine is the avoid going into those big supermarkets and give your business to local greengrocer........your local green grocer will pick the sweetest tastiest fruit often cheaper......not forced to buy 4 apples when you only want one.....greater range of products....

Supermarkets are not interested in fruit and veg......they just want it to last as long as possible and make as much money from you as possible.

That doesn't work in the US. The closest thing I can think of is the farmer's market and they sell cookies, ice cream, and even fresh donuts and my local one!

You can find greengrocers in the US, often in ethnic neighborhoods. I live very close to Oakland's Chinatown, and there are several stores that sell primarily or exclusively produce. The same is true of the Mission in San Francisco, a primarily Hispanic neighborhood.

The farmers market may sell cookies, ice cream, and fresh donuts but it's quite permissible to leave without purchasing them.

That's cool, hoser. I don't know of anything like that in DC where I live (or more accurately, the Virginia suburbs). I did buy brownies at the farmers's market this week - a package of 4 gooey s'mores concoctions. I then cut them up into quarters, took one quarter for myself and left the rest at the reception desk for the rest of the office. Got my little treat and bought some goodwill from my coworkers. I often take treats to the office- I satisfy the urge and remove the temptation before it gets me in trouble!

we don't have a grocer like that in our rural area either; but, do choose farmers market, even though temptation is there also
