Does anyone know why FS does not calculate your net calories (up or down) if you don't enter any exercise for the day?

If you don't enter any exercise then FS has no clue what your calorie expenditure was, so it can't subtract those calories. The equation for net calories is X - Y. In order to get an answer you need to know the values for both X and Y.

Look at it the other way-- if you didn't enter any food for the day would you expect FS to be able to display net calories?

hmmm, okay. Thank you for your response. I was looking at it this way.

calorie goal-calorie intake+exercise=net calories.

So for example

2100-2000+0=100 (I still have 100 calories I can consume before meeting my goal)

2100-2000+400=500 (because I exercised, I now have 500 calories I can consume before reaching my goal)

I am not using exercise as an excuse to eat, I am just trying to be accurate in my calorie goal in order to stay healthy and still lose weight. I wonder if it is the intention of FS for you to meet your calorie goal, or to come in under it, exercising or not.

It's the goal of FatSecret to tell you what you've consumed and what you've burned. Remember that you don't have to be going to the gym or running around the park to burn calories-- you burn calories by typing, eating, staring at the television, cooking, driving to work, sleeping, etc.

The diet calendar page has a column that will tell you where you are in terms of your daily calorie goal. It's a percentage rather than net calories, but it's the same basic info.

In addition to what Hoser says, if you don't exercise you can still enter the calories burned (sleeping, eating) and have those calories recorded by FS. However, you have to click the circle box at bottom of exercise page to say, "this is 100% of my exercises". If you don't check the circle your exercise calories will not be recorded. Same is true for food calories, check the bottom of food entry page.

The universe speaks in many languages but only one voice. The langage is not Narn or human or Centauri or Gaim or Minbari. It speaks in the language of hope. It speaks in the language of trust. It speaks in the language of strength and the language of compassion. It is the language of the heart and the language of the soul. But always it is the same voice. It is the voice of our ancestors speaking through us. And the voice of our inheritors waiting to be born. It is the small, still voice that says: "We are one." No matter the blood, no matter the skin, no matter the world, no matter the star: we are one. No matter the pain, no matter the darkness, no matter the loss, no matter the fear: we are one. Here gathered together in common cause we agree to recognize this singular truth and this singular rule: that we must be kind to one another. Because each voice enriches us and ennobles us, and each voice lost, diminishes us. We are the voice of the universe, the soul of creation, the fire that will light the way to a better future. We are one.
