I am 66 and have been healthy and pretty physically active most of my life. I have no blood pressure or cholesterol issues, even at my age. Fifteen years ago, I started gaining weight and nothing seemed to stop it--exercising more, eating less. I was tired all the time, my hair was thinning out, and I was having a hard time concentrating. I thought, "Is this what it means to get old." It wasn't. It was hypothyroid. Six years later it was cancerous. When they removed my thyroid and I started medication, I dropped 15 pounds. I was thrilled but that was short-lived. Once I was put on a lower dose, the pounds came back. For the last nine years, I have been fighting with a vengeance to NOT gain weight, exercising 30 minutes in the morning and 45 minutes after work every single day. I hit 180. I went to the doctor and they did a metabolic test. My Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) is 1202. RMR >1627 is fast, 1228- 1627 is normal, and <1228 is slow. They suggested that I chart my meals and eat 1323 kcal/day; no more, NO LESS! So here I am!!!

Hi Katherine,
Just wanted to wish you well on your weight loss journey.
Take it easy, just the simple act of brisk walking every day can help yield results. Keep it simple, oats really are your friend! Eat good fats and protein with lots of veggies, whilst keeping an eye on lowering your intake of those pesky carbs, this will go a long way to shedding weight.
Above all, be kind to yourself. Pamper yourself with lots of sleep, live in the moment and enjoy your life in the here and now.
