I have attended 3 OA meetings now. After realizing I am a binge eater, I decided to begin to recover. I have been 3 weeks without chocolate but in my horrible thinking I still consume sugar. I think: If I don't take in chocolate, I can then take in sugar (cookies, fudge, etc.). My weight is not fluctuating much and I continue to run 4x a week; I am running in a 5K tomorrow! Smile This is all pretty scary. BUT I took that first step to get into a recovery program.
This all started when it occurred to me that I was hiding food in my car, buying large quantities of chocolate and cookies and eating them from the package as I was driving, sneaking food into my house, keeping food in my desk at work, sneaking bits and pieces from the work fridge, etc. etc. Maybe you know what I am talking about. Please reach out if you do. I am looking for support. At the OA meetings, it is relieving to hear stories like mine. I binge but now I can begin to recover.

Been there, done that, know all the tricks!

I found it easier to cut out all sweets and treats, after a few days - maybe a week, I didn't crave them anymore.

Essentially, I view it as an addiction, don't buy it and don't go shopping when I am feeling down/hungry and if it's a real treat (sometimes you just feel you need it!), then I ask hubby to buy myself something small, so I can't binge eat the chocolate/sugary food.

I love chocolate and did you know that unsweetened cocoa powder is also good for you? Add it to a half banana in oatmeal for breakfast or a dessert, just go easy on it, a medium half banana, 1 Tbsp. cocoa (unsweetened) and 1/4 cup oatmeal with 1/2 cup water is only 150 calories and very filling. I am trying to find recipes to add cocoa powder to canned beans. Did a protein bar with the latter and peanut butter and oatmeal, and it was pretty good with lots of fiber and protein for just 225 calories. Anyone have other recipes similar, please let me know!

Why is chocolate bad? I'm also a binge eater and chocolate is my kriptonite. When I want chocolate I just make space for it in my food diary.

I'm almost at maintenance now (goal is 110, currently 118 ) and I've never stopped eating chocolate (or anything else I wanted.)

As a matter of fact, in my experience, the million past restrictive fad diets I've tried always made me yoyo and ultimately fail. (from low carb like Atkins to calorie deficit like the grapefruit diet-lol)

This time around (I started last year April) I didn't restrict anything. Ate EVERYTHING I wanted. I now lost almost all the weight I wanted, started exercising, feeling awesome physically and mentally because I'm not obsessing about what I "cannot" eat, and I know I can maintain this way of eating forever.
I miss noting and I need nothing extra.

To each its own.

I hear you Gregorio. So glad you are finding help. I do not know about you but at least with me there are also other emotional issues happening when I lose control of eating and I need to face those as well.

I find that it's not chocolate I crave but cocoa powder, maybe it's the same for you. I have hot chocolate made with cocoa powder, sweetener and cream twice a day as my treat. If I don't treat myself, I wouldn't diet. The calories is in the cream so just add enough to suit your taste. Hope this helps.

So are you wanting support for 'chocolate' or 'binge eating' because those are two different things. For chocolate I get the 'evolved eating keto one' cups (because my woe is Lchf) and the dark chocolate is unsweetened so it takes getting used to but helps me satisfy a chocolate craving without blowing my macros. For binge eating I go through a set of 'do this first' (phone a friend, take a walk, drink water, breathe, etc) to get past that first few 10-15 mins when the binge desire can be the strongest. And one of the little sayings that has helped me whenever I 'chose' to remember it, ((because it really is a choice - we all just decide whether to refrain or rationalize)) is from the Eat What you Love, love what you Eat book and that goes:
1) When I am hungry, I will eat what I love
2) When I am bored, I will do something I love
3) When I an lonely, I will call someone I love
4) When I am sad, I will remember I am loved.
This has helped me a lot esp as when I feel the need to binge it's usually emotional and requires reflection.
