I have been thinking about trying Atkins but my concern is that I have high cholesterol. Is it safe to do atkins because I have always been told by doctors to avoid eggs, cheese, fats and grease.
Has anyone had good results with this diet? what about gaining weight..I have recently lost a bit of weight and am afraid to add these things for fear of gaining it back.
I'll be away from the computer for awhile but will check back in later to see if theres any replys. Thanks!

Works for me when nothing else has. I haven't had my bloodwork checked yet, but I've been at it for 3 weeks and lost 8.5 lbs. I had been eating a 1500 calorie diet for months previously, and lost nothing. This is fantastic! I am still doing induction for another 10 lbs. or so.

I am a huge fan of low carb high (good)fat eating plan and I am a living testament that it works for weight loss and great blood work!

Once you get of the processed foods and the high sugar content crap your body will use real food for energy and it's not stored. Complex carbs are great, simple carbs are not and once the sugar is gone from your body and mind its so easy to avoid them in the future.

Have a look at this book that dispels the myth that fat is bad. Of course there are many different types of fats and you have to learn what is good and has nutritional value, i.e. avocado and olive oil, and what is bad and not good for you at all (trans fats) but in my opinion as far as weight loss and over all general health go, sugar is the toxin of our times.

and remember that Dr's take less than one months training in nutrition so I put very little credence in their guidance.

I don't get it. Your bad cholesterol ldl has skyrocketed while the good hdl has decreased. Why are you happy bout this?

Blood lipids after 3 months -
Cholesterol - 164 (Below 200 is considered HEALTHY)
Triglycerides - 110 (Below 160 is considered HEALTHY)
HDL - 38
VLDL - 22
LDL-104
( LDL Between 100-129mg is NEAR OPTIMAL)

Saturated fat raises the big fluffy LDL and lower the small, dense LDL. The greater the amount of saturated fat you consume, the greater the portion of your LDL will be the benign big fluffy kind.

What raises small, dense LDL? Refined carbs. Avoid them at all costs.

A total cholesterol number is also not very meaningful. What's important is your HDL/triglycerides ratio. The better the ratio, the more likelihood your LDL is the predominately the big fluffy pattern instead of the the small dense pattern. Alternatively, you can take a VAP test and find out for sure.

Congrats on your Lab Results, Catherder!

Thanks for the replys. I think I will do a bit more research before starting it. I have a doctors appointment in 2 weeks so I'll ask my doctor about it. She told me at my last appointment to limit the carbs and cut the sugar. I have been doing just that. I have cut out junk food and soda ad don't add any extra sugars or salt. I have cut my calories down to 1200 a day. I'm doing ok but the weigh isn't coming off like I'd like it to. It's about 1 pound a week. I'm just wondering if I cut out even more carbs if it would help.
any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

LMS1230, your doctor knows what she is talking about. Most doctors and nutritionist today, are still pushing you to eat high starchy carbs that can cause inflammation, brain fog, and unnecessary weight gain. If you get in the good fats, you will find that you stay satisfied longer, and will no longer have binges. Being you know your doctor is on board with lowering carbs, get a good low carb book and read it from front to back and highlight what areas really gets your attention, just in case you have to refer back to it in the future. Good luck on your quest for finding "healthy."

I have done this. I know it works. My triglycerides came down. My good cholesterol went up, and my bad cholesterol came down.

Maybe you're low in salt. Try 1-2 cups of chicken broth or bouillon a day. The New Atkins Made Easy said that if you exercise, the Atkins flu would last longer than a few days to a week. Hang in there, you can do it! It gets better.

YvonneD123. Thank you sooo much. You know I have posted four times and nobody answered to give me a clue about this. I also live in a very hot climate. Just to know that it will get better was all I needed to carry on. Cheers Smile

one pound a week is great........the slower the loss the longer you keep it off.
