Eating healthy through menopause

I started Fatsecret almost a year ago. I am now down a total of almost 100lbs. I was ok as a heavy woman but was having some major perimenopausal symptoms. I did a ton of research and discovered that almost all the websites stressed diet and exercise to lessen the symptoms. Thats what made me lose the weight. I also found that there really arent many support groups out there for women going through menopause so I started one here. I hope this will help all woman going thru this change. i'm so happy to read your comment. i am going through periomenapause and my weight in less than a year has increased 11 lbs. my energy low - i need to get back to at least 140 lbs. i'm going to check out your forum.

I struggle bad with low energy. The vitamins I take actually help with that. On the days that I have absolutely no energy, I rest. But on the days Im just tired, I push myself and usually feel much better afterward.

For some strange reason, our bodies crave sugar when are go thru this process. It is hard sometimes to resist eating the sugary food. I go and buy the 100 calories snacks. I just found them in Klondike bars,and when I get the urge I eat one. Of course I include it as part of caloric intake. It seems to satisfy the craving.

The last 2 years were tough on me as well. Although I don't have the more severe menopausal symptoms [heart palpitations, hot flashes etc], my energy plummeted. I am now better and going to Curves mostly every week-day. Although I gained about 12 lbs. in those 2 years, I have lost inches. I am also paying more attention to my food intake and keeping a food journal again. I will also check the group.

Muscle weighs more than fat. I cheat every once in a while but when I do, I really pay for it. This menopause stuff is horrible! lol

I have not found that diet or exercise has made any difference at all with the symptoms. That being said, I did discover that I have been chronically dehydrated for many years (to the point of not feeling thirst anymore), so increasing my fluid intake to recommended amounts has considerably lessened my pain and improved my overall health Smile

If your hormones are abnormal due to genetics or failing thyroid, beyond normal menopause, diet can only do so much. I started bio-identical hormone treatment about 2 years ago, and feel like it has truly saved my life!

I'm not pushing BHRT, but if you feel like "the change" is really having a long term negative effect on the quality of your life, then you really need to talk to your doctor, and may want to consider it. I feel like I lost 10 years of my life because doctors failed to identify what my problem really was.

... on the positive side of that, I am now feeling MUCH better and making up for lost time! Eating healthy is not just for menopause; it is for life Smile

Mysoda, I had not heard of DIM supplements until you just mentioned it and it sounds very promising.

I have been recently, for about 4 months, using Chang Shan (Himalayan hydrangea root extract). It is currently being studied as a treatment for autoimmune disorders. I have psoriasis and have been off and on immunosuppressants for most of my adult life as well as having wasted lots of money on many “snake-oil” promises. The difference with chang shan is that there is actual scientific evidience and current studies that it works. There is indication that Chang Shan can help stop immune response without suppressing the entire immune system. Smile I can’t say that is works for sure, but I just stopped taking it 2 weeks ago and am now experiencing a significant flare. I will start taking it again in a couple of weeks and see what happens.

I am most definitely going to look at the DIM as well.
