My mom is a twin as well as my grandpa so I've never thought of twins as undesirable in the slightest, it runs in my genes!

I don't think most people consider twins undesirable people. Personally, I don't believe your professor meant anything demeaning to you and your sister. As a teacher myself, I make eye contact with students for many reasons and one of those is definitely because I know that they'll have a connection for the topic I'm discussing. When I teach about the US Civil War, the discussion of slavery including their treatment and the mindset of the people during this era/time leading up to it must be talked about. If I happen to have an African American child in my class, I will often make eye contact with the student(s) because I know that they will make a connection because it is part of their heritage. If I were teaching a class such as yours, and discussing human research, I too would look at you and your sister because you make a personal connection that most people can't. This is a "wow" factor that makes the twin(s) think about research that was done on people like them simply because they were twins. While it may draw attention to you from your classmates, many today would be wondering why this quality would make someone undesirable. The key words your teacher used were "used to do." I wouldn't say that your teacher was expressing that you and your sister are undesirable people, nor that twins are to be hated.

Shock I have never heard such a thing! that's rediculous... In fact, twin and sibling studies are very helpful for medical research as it decreases the variabilities that any result can be the cause of individual variations as you are genetically similar if not the same in the case of identical twins.

In fact it seems to be practically a trend so many celebs have multiples examples: Mariah Carey, Marcia Cross, Brad &Angelinia, Jlo, Dennis Quad, etc.

It is true that in the early stages of medical development, like phase one trials, they have to use health human volunteers to determine safe doses and stuff like that. In order to get volunteers, they offer money, so it tends to be the young and otherwise poor and minorities, there are two of these companies in the city I lived in and they would have commercials on the tv and radio trying to get volunteers.

I suspect that that what the professor was saying is that twins were considered undesirables at some point in the past, not that they were currently.

I actually think "undesirable people" was not directed at "twins"....

They probably teated on people that were already considered crazy at the time, people with weird illness, criminals too I'd imagine....

And then separate from that.... oh, and yeah they also did studies on twins.

I don't connect the two words at all...

Either way, nothing the matter being twins. If you hate it, don't take classes together. Lol! J think your lucky to have a sibling! You will be invaluable to each other through it life. Family is a blessing.

"undesirable people" are murders, rapists and paedophiles - if they happen to be a twin then that would just be a coincidence.

I Have always thought of twins as such a miracle! I don't have kids and don't plan to have any but I always said that if i ever do I would love to have twins. To me twins are highly desirable.

I've read through all the posts and have nothing to offer except this worthless tid bit. When I first read your question what popped into my own head, and I can only use my own reality as a frame of reference, I thought the term 'undesirable people' was referring to fat people. I kid you not. See how it goes? No matter who we are, where we are or what we are doing we are very capable of turning it in on ourselves.

And one note about twins. My husband always wished for twins. "Two little blonde girls," he would say. "So they can kiss me on the the cheeks at the same time."

You're internalizing this too much. Take a peice of sage advice from an old bird... let it roll off and move on. There are going to be SO many more perceived slights in your lifetime that if you trip over each one, you won't make progress or accept yourself. Twin or not. Definitely not. I think the "science" is that twins were used for "medical testing" because they provided a natural control group. Do something or administer something to one twin but not the other and compare the reaction. Because of their genetic similarities, the results could be more consistent than if two random people were compared. I don't think that makes twins undesirable, on the contrary, they were very desirable for research, which, of course, was a bad thing. I think history is full of examples of people who were exploited and to justify that exploitation, mankind called them "undesirable" or "untouchable" or "disposable" or whatever. It's a disgusting fact of our history. And one I hope we have learned to forgo.

Like PishPosh, I prayed for twins with both of my pregnancies. Twins run heavily in both my husband's family and mine, and I was taking handsful of fertility drugs, but alas, with all science in my favor, I had daughters in two separate pregnancies who couldn't be more different. In retrospect, this failure to twin was a good thing because I learned the hard way that I couldn't possibly handle two babies at once!

Take heart, and congratulations on your nursing studies. I think nurses are the most undervalued and underappreciated members of the work force. Let me say in advance, as a mom of a kid who has spent more than her share of her 3 short years in and out of hospitals, thank you for your kindness, hardwork, and dedication.

I think the only "undesirable" thing about twins is that "HOLY SH**" overwhelming feeling you would get when you find out your having 2 instead of 1. I have always been scared as hell to have twins/triplets... just because the financial repercussions. I always thought twins were pretty cool though Smile

Shmiller is right.

Your teacher was reffering to the practices of (among others) Nazi doctor Mengele at the concentration camps in Poland and Germany during WW2.

There he tested on "undesirables", being in Nazi-Germany Jews, Gypsies, gays and other minorities. Among them the twin made good test subjects for the reasons Shmiller explained.

In all my time on earth, in all the places I've lived, in all the things I've read and people I've listened to, I've never once heard anyone say anything derogatory about twins just because they were twins. It never occurred to me that anyone would harbor any sort of prejudice against them, because I've never heard it. Ever., I don't think twins are "undesirable," and I doubt very much that's what the instructor was suggesting, consciously or unconsciously.

Yes, agreed - your professor was surely pointing out the craziness inherent in considering twins 'undesirables', not saying you had ACTUAL status as such.

I'm sad you & your sister don't like being twins, though. I hope you at least love being sisters!

I've never heard that before in my life. Both my kids have multiple sets of twins in their grade and most kids think they're lucky. Everyone else looks no different at them than everyone else.

Do you think you're confusing future parents lack of desire for twins as " all twins are undesirable"? A lot of people might not want to have twins because one 3 year old or 17 year old for that matter at a time is enough. It doesn't mean once they have them their not overjoyed!

Personally, I would have been ecstatic at having twins! Then again, I didn't do any of the heavy work during labor Smile

I don't think twins or any other multiples, have ever been considered a class of undesireable people. Now, if they chose twins as a subset of undesireable people, that's a different thing.

Wow! I've never heard of twins as undesirable. I always wanted a twin and knew many people who hoped they'd have twins.

Are you sure (s)he meant to link twins and undesirables? Scientists do love to study twins because they have such similar genetic makeup that a more pure result is given. For example, when a nature vs. nurture study is done, nothing says it better then identical twins seperated at birth.

Also, the classic research on "undesirables" is that which was done in concentration camps, ordered by Hitler. Now, who is more undesirable then Hitler? Few people consider him to be a credible source. I'd like to think your prof is pointing out the way things used to be (history is important- especially the unpleasant parts) not condoning the activity.
