I've been muddling along counting calories etc but thought I'd try it. So much talk of Keto diets but IMO it's just eating loads of fat! Been to the doc recently and my BP is really high! Surely eating a balanced diet is better than this?

Who is surely? Lower BP through exercise or meds. Diet balanced or meds. High protein(what is high exactly?!?) or meds. Hmmm. . . .I am noticing a trend here....and yes, in order to eat like a k-e-t-o-e-r you'd probably need fat in your diet more so then carbohydrates and proteins. Then again. . .

People just want to hear they can eat loads of bacon and be healthy. That's why Keto is so popular. There's no good evidence backing up any of the health claims.

if your blood pressure is high, it definitely isn't because you are eating Keto. Most likely its a result of NOT doing Keto right. Eating fat won't elevate your blood-pressure. As a matter of fact, if you are doing Keto right, your BP will be WAY DOWN because your body stops storing water & sodium.
And Keto is NOT high-protein. Its high-fat, low-carb, medium protein.
I've cut my BP medication by 3/4, and the only reason that I'm not off it completely is that my doctor wants to be conservative. I average 100/65.

Did you mean fat? Nothing wrong with high protein. It's the best macro for satiety, muscle gain, and fat loss.

Protein (in excess) increases insulin. For those that are insulin resistant, that helps them gain weight. Everyone's tolerance varies, but for me, anything over 120 grams of protein a day kicks me out of Ketosis.

Protein always causes insulin to rise. Carbs do too. Good thing the insulin response is irrelevant to fat loss/gain since calories determine that. Keto also is irrelevant to fat loss.

I try to change my way of eating rather than "diet". More protein because quidelines recommend .5% of your body weight, and i don't want to lose muscle as losing weight. I am 160 lb and try for 80 protein daily. I plan my meals to get the 5 a day fruit and veg, as well as the 25 fiber recommended.

My cheap homemade pea soup is high in both protein and fiber. A can of mackerel (3 or 4 meals) with onion, vinegar and lemon makes your Omega 3 intake cheap and easy as a salad or sandwich. It is safer for mercury levels than too much tuna. Oatmeal can be filling and sweetened with apple or banana. Cottage cheese is low in calories and high in protein. Popcorn without the butter or oil is a great filler and provides fiber and protein.

Should anyone else have some great low cal, high protein or fiber suggestions, please drop me a line. Thanks!

Reading this really helped me see the light on protein intake. I realize i was eating way to much protein as well and using Fatsecret. I am weight lifting and trying to gain weight and I kid you not I was eating any where from 350g to 450g of protein a day not on purpose just because I lost weight with keto and thought that is what my body needed. I have been doing that amount of protein for a few months and it gave me horrible gas and I also think it is affecting my autoimmune issues. I hope by dialing the protein down I can get some relief. Here is the link. good luck.

I generally eat what I like, as long as I actively limit added sugar, but what surprised me was how little protein someone my size / weight / actually needs - which is good because I am vegetarian. 50 grams per day and I do that mainly on dairy and egg. I try to balance things out because I view this as a long term health issue rather than just weight loss. It needs to be something I can sustain too.
