My brother turned me on to fatsecret. He has lost about 60 lbs over the past four months on the Slim-Fast diet, which was inspiring enough to get me to try it.

I've had a weight problem since high school and I've tried many approaches from ignoring my obesity to seriously working through a variety of diets. I have lost substantial amounts -- in university I got to my ideal weight by simply counting calories and living on 1500 a day. About five years ago I lost over 40 lbs. on the Akins diet. But each time, I bounced back to 260, which has been my average weight for the past 20 years or so.

Aside from my weight... I've been living in Japan for the past 30 years. I run my own business here teaching English to Japanese children. Before I came to Japan, I was a psychotherapist, working with adolescents in Los Angeles. I'm married for 28 years and we have two sons, both in university. I've got a lot of hobbies and very little time to indulge them. I love travel and manage at least one trip abroad per year. I enjoy playing, watching and listening to a wide range of music. I love photography and probably spend more time on that than all my other hobbies combined.

Hunger
On my new plan (Slim-Fast), I was intensely hungry for the first two or three days, then I adjusted to the new calorie level and I only felt hungry occasionally. The plan has me eating six times a day, so I'm never more than a couple of hours away from a meal or snack and that helps me resist if I do feel particularly hungry.

After a week on the plan, it was kind of automatic. I still had to fight the urge to snack, but that was more about boredom than hunger. I did have a return of intense hunger when I started back at the gym, but again after a week of so of acclimating, that has gone away too.

What's your workout?
I aim to get to the gym 5x a week. Life and work don't always cooperate, though.
I do 30 minutes on stationary bike at 12 mph.
I do alternate days of upper and lower body weight training for a total of about 30 minutes a session.
Today I added a 5 mile walk to and from the gym, which felt really good, but once I got home, climbing the stairs to my room wasn't pleasant. I think I'm going to be sore tomorrow.

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone.
I've been in Japan for 30 years, so it's probably permanent at this point. We own a small language school where we teach English to Japanese children. It's a lot of work, but it's really nice to be work for yourself.

@jsfantome - I agree completely. I don't know how many times over the years I've told myself that it's not a diet, it's a change of lifestyle. Unfortunately telling myself is a lot easier than making it happen. At any rate, I've made it through the first two weeks successfully and I'm feeling like my body has adjusted to the amount I'm eating, so I'm not hungry all the time. I've been in this place before, so I know I can sustain it for a substantial period until something comes up and knocks me off stride. It's dealing with that adversity that I really need to work on.

@MissClique - I'm amazed that I'm able to get by on 1200 calories a day and that I'm able to function without any real food until the 500 calorie dinner. But after two weeks I've adjusted quite well so right now I'm not feeling hungry that much. My only problem so far has been that when I get home from work I'm ready to eat right now! and most of the recipes from the Slim-Fast website take a substantial amount of time to prepare. On the other hand, the portions are so small, that cooking one chicken breast makes dinner for two days.

Hi, I'm Alan. I'm an American living in Yokohama, Japan. I've been on this site for the past two weeks trying the Slim Fast diet, and so far, so good. I'm aiming to lose about 80 lbs.

I've found the Food and Exercise tool on this site to be extremely helpful at keeping me on track and motivated. Living in Japan, where obesity is not a major issue, means a real dearth of resources when trying to lose weight. I even have to have the Slim Fast drinks and bars shipped in from the States; a process that takes 4-6 weeks. So having an easy way to track my calories makes a real difference.

I'm hoping to be active in the community here. I've always found it much easier to lose weight and stay motivated when sharing the experience with others. If anyone is interested in a diet buddy with many, many years experience trying to lose weight, I'm your man.

Cheers, everyone!
-Alan
