Weight History

Start Weight
195.0 lb
Lost so far: 4.4 lb

Current Weight
190.6 lb
Performance: losing 1.7 lb a week

Goal Weight
186.0 lb
Still to go: 4.6 lb
Am usually a 'healthy' weight by medical standards (190-200 lbs), but have not been at an optimal weight (~180 lbs) since college. (I am 6'3".) This time, it is going to happen.

Also, have a full marathon (26.2 miles) in June 2013. So losing some weight will pay big dividends there.

Have a moderate weight lifting routine, partly to stop my body from burning muscle while I train for the marathon.

My goal is to lose 15 lbs of fat by March 1st, then switch to ~3000 cal/day diet to stabilize.

Here we go! :)

Yep. It's as bad as it sounds. Why anyone would do this, I have no idea.

Giving up Splenda & other artificial sweeteners
Another shocking fact was about transfats - they were even worse!!

Transfats are so horrifically damaging to the body, I can't understand why it's still legal.

Even worse, a product can CLAIM to have zero transfat, but actually have up to half a gram!

Giving up Splenda & other artificial sweeteners
The vast majority of studies haven't found any safety issues with Splenda. But the product is new enough that no long-term studies have been conducted yet.

It's definitely safer than aspartame (nutrasweet), which may cause cancer in rats even at normal consumer levels. (http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/releases/34040.php)

I tend to avoid Splenda, aspartame, and processed sugar in general. 2 reasons:

1. The human body did not evolve with these chemically-processed sweeteners. They have nothing of benefit to the body, and probably quite a bit of harm. Humans did evolve with natural sweeteners, such as honey, so I tend to stick to those alternatives.

2. Recent research shows that artificially sweetened foods cause weight gain. (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/06/29/diet-soda-weight-gain_n_886409.html)

Hope this was useful! Smile

Hello!
I suppose swimming is like running in that they are both are great for losing weight.

My exercise approach is to run 4 time a week, then do a basic leg exercise at the gym once a week. For example: rowing.

My diet approach is to burn ~500-1000 calories a day more than I consume. Not hard if one is running/swimming regularly.

Also, as a runner I need to lift weights to stop my body from burning muscle. But I would guess swimmers don't have to worry as much about that.

Hello!
Hi Ines! What sport are you looking to compete in?

If it's running events, like the 5K or marathons, then I'd be happy to trade ideas. I've been researching that for awhile.

But if its something like power-lifting or baseball, perhaps someone else could give you better advice.

Good luck! Smile
