The gym membership is paying for itself. I've been pounding away on those treadmills and pumping the iron. I'm managing to go 4 to 5 times every week. This week I've increased the distance to 2.4 km (6 laps) running. The weights have increased by a couple of notches too. On Tuesday, I did a 10 km hike in the morning then the gym in the afternoon. I can feel an increase in strength. Not much change on the scales, but I can feel changes in body shape. I might need to tighten my belt buckle an extra notch next week.

Down a little more today. Slow but surely. Keeping up with the gym routine. Fits neatly into my afternoon schedule most days. Last Tuesday, my time for running 2 km was 16:16. (honestly, I can walk faster.) This week it was 14:40.

Joined a gym today.
Or more correctly, I was joined up to a gym. I hadn't asked for it, but my wife surprised me. It wasn't a huge surprise. She had mentioned it last month and I had mentioned it last year. The real surprise is that she actually did it, and signed me up, rather than just talk about.
I know many of you will have done the usual routine of joining a gym, going a few times, then falling out of the habit and wasting your membership. I don't expect to do that. Regular exercise has been part of my routine for the last four years. I just usually go to the park to run and use the equipment there, rather than to a gym. However, winter is coming, (:-p) and my wife doesn't think it is healthy to exercise in -20C temperatures plus the roads can be slippy to jog on in the snow and ice, so I had been wanting to join the gym, and now I have.
So today, as usual on a Tuesday, I went for a 10 km hike, did some chin-ups, push-ups and sit-ups in the park. After that morning of exercise, I came home to be presented with the membership card. I felt obliged to go and use the new gift, so after lunch, we went downstairs to the gym.
I did another 2 km running on the treadmills then lifted some weights before hitting the showers. This was the first time I had run any significant distance on a mill. Usually, I run on the track at the university. I had always regarded them as boring hamster wheels. One advantage of the treadmill, I can see, is that it prevents the tendency to over speed. You know, when you start off too fast and then exhaust yourself too early. The treadmill forces you to keep a steady speed all the time.
