I'm a techie and love science. I use to fall for all the BS about which diet is better. I then educated myself on how the body works and what the research really says. I now use a scientific approach to my diet. Eat a choice of mostly nutritious foods, eat when you want, in moderation. It is all about the calories.

UPPING THE METABOLISM
I agree on keeping the metabolism up. I just don't agree that long steady state cardio is the best means. There has been a recent study that showed that a high energy flux (eat more/burn more) is more effective for weight maintenance than low energy flux (calorie restriction only). I do agree that exercise should be part of any long term strategy.

UPPING THE METABOLISM
You mention formal exercise which is beneficial for health but has other implications for weight loss. It has been shown that strenuous exercise actually increases hunger. It has also been shown that long steady state (high or low intensity) causes reductions in metabolic rate due to increased efficiency. The ideal solution is getting in "exercise" without the body realizing it's exercise. That's where NEAT (non-exercise activity thermogenesis) comes in. By doing low intensity short duration activities the body does not respond the same as to exercise. This can be simple things like fidgeting in your chair, parking away from stores and walking a little further, walking instead of driving, taking walk breaks, standing instead of sitting, etc. This activity can add up to a couple of hundred calories/day that it appears the body pretty much ignores. Over time it adds ups to a couple lbs /month weight loss without any additional food restriction and has been found to be effective for weight loss and maintenance. So, formal exercise for health, high intensity, short duration (~20-30 minutes total/session) and increased NEAT to assist in the weight loss and maintenance.

Diet Pills
Alli is as lipase inhibiter. It's a half dose of Xenical. It works by blocking up to 30% of dietary fat. It's meant to be used on a low calorie low fat (< 30% of calories from fat) diet. As others have said if your on a high fat diet while taking Alli you are asking for trouble.

Low Carb or Low Fat or Low What?
I would double check your calorie allowance using one of the several online calculators. I would not use the one on this site as it is way high. Once you have eaten at the level for two weeks check to see if you are losing. If not drop you allowance by 100 calories and check again in a week. Keep doing that until your weekly drop rate is where you want it to be. Like Diablo360x said, all you need is to eat less than you burn to lose weight. You just need to find out where that point is.

1200 calorie per day but most of the calories still come from carbs
I agree with Diablo360x, the secret to making the changes permanent is finding a way of eating that you can stick with in the long term.
