Nehiyaw's Journal, 29 March 2012

well i have tried running (if you want to call it that, i am sure my neighbors call it funny walking). i have always "wanted" to be a runner. I envy people who run, so for those of you who can, that is a great gift, i know your endurance and body is trained, but most runners have a "runner's body, legs and that inhuman endurance", I really think most of you are mutants. To be able to lace up, run for 5 - 36 miles, control your breathing, the stamina and endurance, the smoothness of your legs so you don't damage your joints, the muscular legs and calves, the mental toughness of not quitting or actually having to spend 1 - 4 hours by yourself thinking, ..... Well i admire you. I wish i could do what you do. I never will. I'm ok with that. My body was made for other things. I have heard stories from the old people (native canadians) in our area that running was a skill that native hunters needed to hunt in the old day. I heard stories that hunters would run great distances to go to their hunting area, hide until they saw their prey, strike the prey, then usually have to run for miles to follow the wounded prey. I think about that when I try to run, hahaha. I think about how skinny I would have been back then, because of not being able to run and hunt ;) . I tried "running" again last night. Wow my endurance is bad, I want to improve that. My knees don't like me today. Mostly because I have bad form and pound them pretty hard. I have come to the conclusion that I'll be happy with being the raccoon hunter, or some similar animal that waddles like i do. I'll leave the deer and buffalo to my running buddies.

I am with you on the difficulty of being left alone with your own thoughts for up to four hours. That is a complete meatgrinder for me and is where music and baseball on the radio come in handy. Nothing better than taking in a Twins game while on a long run. If I had to be alone with my thoughts for that long I would not be a runner...no doubt about it. I actually have to sleep with the TV on too (drives my wife craaaaaaaaaaaaazy) otherwise I just sit there and think about what a toolbox I am. I've got problems:)

Ok I loved this journal entry - it cracked me up and motivated the hell outta me all at the same time!!! The icing on the cake was the line about being a raccoon hunter.. Hahaha.. love it. I know that Rpalmst would get to all of the deer and buffalo before I ever could, so I'd have to bribe him with candy bars until he shared.. I'm still working on being a 'true runner' and being able to have more endurance and control over my body, but I'm getting there. And don't discount your 'funny walking' - a 75 year old man passed me last year during my 1/2 marathon at the 7 mile mark while he was 'funny walking' - he was an incredible speedwalker and I had to give him credit. He won't be passing me this year though.. ;)

Lmao... Too funny! Just had a mental image of you stalking raccoons.... Maybe you were meant to trap? :-) There's always the beaver...
