amanda123's Journal, 21 September 2010

Well I had an interesting/scary night. On my way home from school about 9:30 pm I hit a cow and totalled my car. It was dark and the cow was black which didn't help. I saw it walk out accross the road and I slammed my breaks. I tried to go around it but I couldn't. My car hit it a little sideways. It must have hit the windshield and then the body slapped the passenger side of my car. My hood is dented and the front passenger light tore up. The windshield shattered and caved in but is still there - mostly. The passenger front window is gone - shattered and totally gone. The back passenger window is shattered but still there. I don't think you can open my passenger front door. The whole passenger side got hit pretty bad. I even have cow poo on my passenger back window. My roof is dented and caved also. I was so blessed. I must have had a guardian angel with me or something because I walked away with just a cut on my finger. I was shaking so bad I couldnt hardley dial my cell phone. I got ahold of my step mom first and she asked if I had called the police? Duh - That hadn't even crossed my mind yet. So I called them and they kept asking me if I needed an ambulance and I had to tell them no at least 3 times. Then my car started smoking and they wanted to know if I needed a firetruck. I told them no and killed the engine. I think my transmission fluid was leaking out and smoking? I had glass EVERYWHERE! In my mouth, my shoes, my bra. I had cow hair all over my shirt. After I took a shower I still found glass in my ears and my nose! The poor cow, she didnt die right away. :( I walked up to her and she was breathing funny and trying to get up. She lived for at least 15 minutes after I hit her. It was really sad. This is in the middle of the country just 2 miles from home. The guy who owned the cow dragged it off of the road. I told them that there were 2 so he went looking for the other one. I just bought my car 6 months ago. It's a 2002 Hyunda Sonata. I loved that car - very reliable, 30 mpg, cold ac, sunroof. Plus it was paid for. We bought it with our income tax return last year for about $2700 and I didnt have full coverage insurance. So unless his homeowners or farm policy covers it I am SOL. I have another car, it's an 01 Kia Rio. It is a little cheap car that is even better on gas mileage and it's our backup car but I loaned it to my brother this week to go back to college in Stillwater. So I am vehicle-less right now. I borrowed my stepmom's SUV today. On the bright side - algebra is starting to sink in a little and I lost 2 pounds yesterday.
220.0 lb Lost so far: 68.0 lb.    Still to go: 65.0 lb.    Diet followed reasonably well.

Found out his farm insurance most likely won't cover the damages. According to Oklahoma law the owner of the cow is lot liable unless you can prove that he has bad fences or his cows have a history of getting out. I think he has good fences and this is the first time I have ever saw his cows out so I am probably not getting any help with my car.

Oh my goodness, Amanda....A cow???? I have had a deer charge my van and head butt the driver's side door, back up, shake his head and walk away, but a COW??? Holy cow (no pun intended), that is CRAZY!!! Hope that the farmer decides to do the right thing and reimburse you for your car. And I am so sorry that you had to watch the poor cow suffer. That is hard...Good job on the weight loss and happy for you that the algebra is sinking in. Once it starts to click, it gets much easier!!

Yep a cow. I was driving about 50 or 55 and when I saw it I slammed on my breaks - left rubber for about 50 yards and hit it. I probably hit her at about 40 maybe? I'm not sure. My neck hurts now but I am ok and that's what matters. We can replace a car but not our lives.

It was a big cow too! A black Angus about 1000 pounds or more.

I would get the neck checked out. You could have whiplash! Were you wearing a seatbelt? And that IS one big cow!!

Yes I was wearing my seatbelt. I always wear my seatbelt. I am just so glad the kids weren't with me. If it gets to hurting worse I may have it checked out. I took two excedrin.

Wow, sorry to hear about your experience, and yes you should check out that neck, whiplash creeps up afte the fact. My daughter hit a wild pig driving home this summer, I think she only clipped it, but it scared her to death, and she was more worried about the pig than herself

I can understand that. I felt awful for the cow. As for going to the dr - no health insurance. I am just a little sore in my neck, shoulders, and lower back but it's really not bad at all. I know it could have been alot worse. I will post pics tonight of my car.

Oh Amanda, take it from me, it doesn't take much (MPH) to get injured. When we totalled our car we were originally going about 30-35 before slamming on our brakes. I am still facing daily pain and possibly looking forward to surgery to have my C-5 removed from the stem of my neck. I have yet to pay out of pocket or use my medical insurance. Your car insurance should cover it. The problem with waiting is that if there is a problem, the longer you wait, the worse it's going to get. Call your insurance company and they'll get the paperwork started for you. You've paid for it - use it. So sorry about the accident and Stef is right - Holy cow! Terrible. I'm sure it was scary as it could get. Thank goodness you are alright and it wasn't worse.
