amanda123's Journal, 28 June 2010

I am so frustrated this morning. I went ahead and recorded a weigh in because I have been bouncing between 245.0 and 246.0 for a week now. I am not doing anything different. I am eating the same as I always have but my weight loss is in such a plateau. Here's the thing. I have been in large ketosis all week except for yesterday when I moved into small - moderate because I upped my carbs some. So I noticed Thursday that although I am drinking alot of water I am not urinating very often like I used to. I think I am retaining some water. I am a little worried because I read online that ketones are very irritating to your kidneys and liver and that is why low carb diets usually only recommend induction for 14 days because the ketones are so hard on you. My side has been hurting which I think is just another ovarian cyst but after reading how hard ketones are on you I am a little worried. So yesterday I really upped my water intake and I started pee-ing like normal yesterday afternoon. I used to get up every morning and the scale would read the same or would go down. Now I get up and I could be 245.0 one morning 245.8 the next and 245.2 the next day. I am just fluctuating within that pound. GGGRRRRR! So what do you think? Was I just dehydrated or is long term ketosis messing with my kidneys? I probably need to move into eating more like OWL but I sure don't like my veggies..... the good ones anyways.

Amanda, don't be afraid to move up to OWL. Your body could be getting resistant to where you are right now. Moving up could be the thing that will jump start weight loss. And don't forget, most people will lose the majority of their weight during OWL than they do anywhere else. I have never experienced any pains or problems w/ my kidneys and/or liver but if it continues you should have it checked out.

I don't really think it is my kidneys. Your kidneys hurt in your back right? Well this pain is on my sides and tender when I press in that spot. I'm sure it's not my kidneys. I know I am not getting 20 carbs a day in from veggies. I really need to work on that. I need to make myself learn to eat vegetables. I am going to drink a ton of water today.

Which kind of veggies do you like?
28 Jun 10 by member: kmartin
Broccoli, caulaflower, green beans, squash.... That is it for the low carb ones. I like potatoes, corn, hominy, carrots, beans & peas - which are not allowed. I don't like spinach, sweet peas, okra, lettuce, tomatoe, onion, radishes, cucumber, and most fruits. I like apples & peaches but that is about it for the fruit. Bannanas, kiwi's, and melons make me itch.

Do you think you could work at consuming more broccoli, cauliflower, green beans and squash in order to get your 12-15 carbs? As far as fruits, what about berries?

I might be able to eat the berries if I did something with them.... Maybe if I blended them with ice & cream or something but I'm not crazy about eating them alone. I have been trying to eat more of what I do like and I need to bring some veggies with me to eat at work during lunch. I am so sorry to be on here whining. I feel like such a brat. I just want to get over this plateau and start making some progress. :( I keep telling myself that maybe I am losing inches. Maybe I am? My clothes are still getting looser. I am having to pull up my favorite jeans today at work. I don't remember them being so baggy last week.

Amanda, don't ever feel bad for asking. And don't ever feel bad for wanting to boost your weight loss. However, weight loss stalls are a common occurrance - this is normal. You have lose a considerable amount of weight in a very short time. Your weight loss will slow down from time to time in order for it to readjust. Again - this is normal. Check your measurements. Since your clothes are starting to fit better, I am sure you are losing inches. This is actually better than losing pounds. Don't get discouraged. You will start losing again. As far as the berries go, have you ever tried them w/ a little splenda on them? I love dipping strawberries and/or blackberries with splenda. Yummy!

No, I haven't but I bet if I mixed cream cheese & splenda it would make a great dip for the strawberries. I wish I wasn't so picky! lol! I still haven't measured yet but I know my clothes are looser. Thanks for the support Keli - don't know what I would do without you. Virtual Hugs!

Don't worry about being so picky. I am a very finicky eater myself. Living this WOE is a struggle for all of us. Learning how to deal with frustrations w/o giving in is the ultimate test. You can get there. I am there with you.

I feel your pain about the vegetables but I am forcing myself to eat more of them. I've found that I like raw spinach chopped up in a salad. Hang in there you're doing great.

Amanda, bless your lil heart. I know what it's like to struggle with that fluctuation. You just have to keep in mind that your monthly cycle can play havoc with weights. It's not unusual to fluctuate like that. kmartin is right. As long as you're losing inches, try not to obsess over the scale like I do...like most of us do. As for the veggies, what about salad? Do you like salad? I know dressing can be a challenge. I like to mix about 2 tablespoons of full fat mayo with about a teaspoon of red wine vinegar, a tablespoon of heavy cream, a little garlic powder, salt to taste and a packet of sweetener. This makes a sweet and slightly tart dressing that's so yummy for a small carb calorie investment. From all the reading I've done, dietary ketosis is not hard on you like diabetic ketosis. If you're concerned, you should get it checked out, but be careful. Health care professionals, on whole, are not entirely sold on ketogenic dieting. They're slow to change over from telling us to eat low-fat and non-fat with high complex carbs, i.e., veggies, fruits and whole grains. That's even harder to do if you don't like veggies. One final thought: every new weight level is a struggle for me, too. I'll drop 3 to 6 pounds, then fluctuate up and down for awhile, even while following plan to the letter. As long as clothes are getting looser and you're not having cravings or a desire to eat everything that's not nailed down, you are doing fine. More than fine, coz you're sticking to it. It will come. It just takes some of us a little longer.

Thanks Lavinnia, I know I will start losing again soon. Nope... hate salads. I tried to make myself eat one the other day and I couldn't even chew up one bite. I had to grab my water and swallow the bite like a pill before it gagged me. I think it's all in my head. The problem with me & my food is not in the flavor, but the texture. I don't eat most of this stuff because of the texture. Okra, tomatoes and bannanas are slimy, I don't like the crunch of lettuce. Even my broccoi & caulaflower has to be cooked really well & soft for me to eat it. If my green beans are a little stringy they gag me. I am one wierd cookie.

Amanda I'm weird if my meat looks pink at all I gag and can't eat it. I don't like a lot of veggies either but I make do with lettuce, avocado, tomatoes, green beans, green pepper and cabbage. I don't much like anything else. Go ahead and take your measurements it will encourage you and thinking about weighing just once a week might help. When I weighed every day the fluctuations made me crazy.
