flaxseed's Journal, 22 February 2010

This has been quite some week.

Our car has been in the garage for a couple of days for its annual MOT. Had to have a new front spring. no doubt because of the potholes in the road caused by the snow. The bill wasn't too bad as they discounted it because they had to keep it so long because they had some problems that were nothing to do with us.

I've had the stitches out of my thumb and I think I must have cut through some nerves as I've lost feeling in part of it. Its still very sore and feels as though the bone is bruised. Doc says it will be 3/4 more weeks before its totally healed and he doesn't think the feeling will come back. Eating has not been good. I've given up smoking - just starting on my third week and I seem to be wanting to put something in my mouth the whole time -and most of the time its been food - and not very healthy food either! Over time I seem to have replaced food and dealing with stress with more cigarettes and now I've cut them out its back to the food again. I just have to figure out something else to replace it with or I'll be back where I started. I haven't been recording what I eat either and that seemed to keep me on the straight and narrow. I don't feel I've cracked the 'no smoking' thing yet, but I'm well on my way. I suppose I should give myself a pat on the back, but I'll hang on til I've got my eating back under control. I haven't been too worried about the scale up until now, but today's weigh in has made me think - hard.

We've had more snow today - only a couple of inches but there's more forecast. It always seems to snow when we have a hospital visit. I wonder what the consultant is going to say tomorrow.

Those lovely snowdrops that were coming out when it thawed are all covered in snow again and the birds are looking bewildered too. One day everything is turning green and the next its all covered up and white again - roll on spring. It can't come soon enough for me.

Hope everyone has had a good FS day

That's too bad about your thumb. Great job on quitting smoking. Try drinking coffee everytime you want a smoke or exercise.

I would have preferred to see the doctor remain silent and at least let the healing period pass before he made that statement, as I suspect that at least *some* of it has to do with other neurons picking up part of the lost feeling over time (i.e. beyond just the severed nerves, other factors). Why not just let you struggle with it naturally, at least for a short period. I may be totally wrong though and really have no specialized knowledge in that area that would qualify me to make such a statement. I'm speaking more from an intuitive point of view and am wondering if *he* is a neurologist. Insofar as the diet and smoking are concerned, we all know how difficult it is to tackle both at the same time. You are approaching a three month high on the chart though and it may be best for you to find a gentle way of applying some restraint with the more obviously fattening foods. Try to substitue them for things you really like but that are just "smarter foods." Cheer up and just do your best my friend, hopefully everything will be fine.

I was so happy to see you write a new post here and then felt bad that things have been difficult as of late for you. Perhaps the doctor is wrong about your thumb, let's hope so!! They aren't "ALWAYS" right!!! I have a back and forth relationship with smoking. I feel for you. They've come out with some type of water vapor cigarette here that uses nicotine cartridges but are smokeless that have become very popular. Little by little I guess you reduce the nicotine. Hubby wants to try them out but they are rather pricey. Silly me but I wonder if some acupuncture might help with the thumb ... something non-traditional!!! Anyway, I hope the snow isn't too bad and you get some decent news from the doctor for your OH. You are always in my thoughts!!!
