erikahollister's Journal, 09 December 2016

I've been struggling with sleep. I'll sleep from 10 to 1-3 in the morning and then just wake up, all revved up and completely unable to get back to sleep. For days on end, I'll be functioning on 4or 5 hours of sleep. Amazingly, I don't run out of gas; i do OK most days at work. I do tend to eat more on those days too, so not losing well. So, I've tried substituting bone broth for my previous three mugs of decaf with cream. The sleep has been better for the three nights that I've done this, so I may have found a solution. Time will tell. I am enjoying the bone broth as winter settles in here in New England.
Hope you all have a lovely weekend -- getting ready for the holidays perhaps? I'll be painting my newly enclosed porch and keeping toasty while I do it with my new wood stove -- yay!

Hi Erika 😀 Since starting Atkins 11-1, I've really been sleeping like crap. Usually waking up around midnight & 3:30ish. Just this last couple weeks it's started balancing itself out where Im sleeping solid from 10:30p until 5:30a-ish. The other forum I'm on, lowcarber.org, itself generally thought that the sleep cycle will for a new pattern through diet and you won't need as much sleep 😉 WTH am I supposed to do @ 5:30a?!? lol I've been taking Magnesium those 2 weeks and some people say that makes a difference too.

When I first started keto, I slept more than my habitual 4-6 hours per night. After a few months, I reverted back to my 20+ year pattern. Now it's stabilizing to around 7 per night. When you're fueled 24/7 on keto, you have energy to spare, so sleep is compromised. The key for me is to get really tired from activity during the day.

When I am on hard core keto, I have tons of energy and also find myself waking up - but I burn it off at the gym and eventually can normally sleep once more.

OK maybe more exercise. It is strange that I can go all day on 4 hours of sleep and 1200 calories and not feel tired.

Hi Erika, why don't you try Melatonin say 5mg, capsules are better than pills and see if that helps a bit. Another thing, you can stay up till 11PM this way maybe you stay asleep until 5AM. I hope it works for you!!!

Thanks, Giannis. I take Melatonin every night as well as Magnesium and now Gaba. If I stay up later, I still wake up in the wee hours and get even less sleep. I could try going to bed a 8:30, but that makes for a mighty short evening.
