The hardest part I have about watching my food intake is eating out - I have switched fries to vegetables or salads, and started making better decisions there and trying to order fish whenever available, but it's hard to pass up a juicy steak, or nachos, a bacon cheeseburger, you know - the food that is really good, but not really good for you.

Not going out at all is not going to happen, so what do you do to make better choices?

Well, you already offered the answer, you switched fries to veggies, salads, Obviously you should avoid those foods, I mean only a burger can go over 600-800kcals. Avoid sweets, fried foods, sugars, processed foods. Thats all i can say, hope it helps.

Ps: if your diet calendar is accurate, you're undereating.

I still order burgers and dogs, I just order them without a bun and without cheese. Many places in my area know how to make a low-carb friendly version of their burgers. If my wife and I go to a Mexican restaurant, we will order a (single) order of fajitas, we'll tell the server not to bring the tortillas, then we'll make our own fajita salads. They will be smaller than if we ordered a fajita salad, but that's all I (need). Italian places can be tricky. Many times I end up eating soup and/or salad. Sometimes I get lucky and an Italian place will have a good grilled chicken or fish plate. IF you can control yourself, sometimes I might just grab a single fork full of pasta from a kids plate, just to get the flavor - but only 1 fork full. I haven't tested myself at Taco Bell yet, but most other fast food places have healthy(er) alternatives to their main selections. The way I look at it, I've enjoyed my food... a little too much... for the past 39 years. If it takes a year or so of not enjoying my food (as much), to be healthy, I can handle that. Then, when I get down to my ideal weight, I might enjoy some food luxuries again... if I can handle it without going crazy.

I know the burgers are evil - so tasty but so bad for you! I started getting turkey at home to help, but restaurant's load up their stuff with sodium and other things that defeat the purpose. Any particular places that seem to have actual healthy food to eat? My dietitian set me up for a 2400 calorie diet - I aim for 2000 since I normally go over dumb lie for myself but it's worked thus far if I stick to it (down 15-lbs since May/June. 500-500-500 for meals, and 500-1000 for snacks and overages. This site calculated it at 3100 calories - that's crazy to me, I'm not power lifting, just walking a couple miles a few times a week.

Thanks KahneFan - I laughed at the "IF you can control yourself" part - that's obviously been the hard part - I have to focus on retraining the way I eat.

You don't have to pass on a juicy steak. Order a leaner cut like Sirloin, pair with a slad and ask for dressing on the side. If you order a burger, pair that with a salad instead of fries and adjust the day around this social meal. This means sacrificing some carbs from your other meals to allow from that which will come from the burger. Always try to plan ahead. If you know where you are going, try to view menu online beforehand so you know how to plan the rest of the day and log everything to ensure you are meeting your targets. Be in control of where you are going to eat and choose placed that are more suitable to your needs.

*to allow for that which will come from the burger bun...

Life is too short not to enjoy it. I don't eat fries, I ask for dressing on the side, no dessert, and the best option from the menu. Sometimes it's a steak with broccoli - sometimes it is a brisket basket with a sweet potato..... Italian I eat the protein of choice and only 1/2 the pasta with no breadsticks or wine.... AGAIN you have to enjoy your life to accomplish ANYTHING

Have u ever though of a cheatday/cheatmeal? Basically after eating really clean for a week, you can have a meal of whatever you want and eat as much as you want , but just a meal( in one sitting )

I never have a cheat day! That's like giving a crack head only 1 needle a week! Can't do it! Just make healthier choices when out. Juicy steak-on plan: burger no bun-on plan: pasta-OFF plan: bread-OFF plan, desserts-OFF plan. I do have days of "indulgence" where I go over but still make it healthy, SF, and as low carb as possible(for that day). For Mexican, fajitas are the best go-to. We started with lettuce leaves for wraps and now 10 months later(102 lbs. lost), I opt for corn tortillas instead of flour. Of course some restaurants want to capitalize on us low-carbers. We go to a local diner occasionally for breakfast. They do 2 egg omelets, 2 meats, hash browns, toast, pancakes, and biscuits and gravy for 1 "low" price. We get it and sub the hash browns, toast, pancakes and biscuits and gravy for fresh fruit and cottage cheese. They always like to charge extra for those subs but, I can live with that knowing I WILL be healthier. It used to bother me, wanting to get "all your moneys worth" and all that, but now I'm OK. Like fighting your little brother for the last piece of <insert here>, I do not need that anymore. But, it took this whole year for that mentality to change for me! I wish you luck and remember, you CAN do this, you CAN succeed, you WILL become healthier for YOU and your family!

It's a matter of looking at the numbers first. When you're looking at a 1000 calorie burger you have to be prepared to make the calorie reduction somewhere else. Bob Harper said you can't out train a bad diet. When you look at the numbers at the end of the day, that burger blows up your day. It's like the national debt, balance the budget first before you cut taxes. Do the hard work first and succeed, then get the reward. If you have to walk a mile to get a donut you might say it's not worth it.

I agree PGM012197 - My dietitian looked at how routine I am during the week and acknowledged that my Saturday would not be as healthy as my M-F. Work is actually good for me - I am such a creature of habit - get up the same time in the morning, eat one of 4 things for breakfast, pack a lunch that's low carb, low calorie but filling, drink 64oz of water between 8am and 5pm and then more at home, but then saturday comes around - and while I am trying to make better choices. Thanks Jaymaine - I gotcha - I skip on pancakes and opt for 2 eggs and 2 bacon strips - still a treat but not the 2 eggs, 2 bacon strips, 3 pancakes, or waffle with butter and syrup I used to eat. Replaced soda, with Diet Soda, then with flavored carbonated water, and finally replaced 80% of what I drink with good plain water, sometimes with lemon, to save calories (and generally feel better because of it). So it's a constant improvement. Not eating something cold turkey, trying to fast, etc. will just make me binge eat after - so just need to make the choice and balance the Input to the output. I've been finding low calorie foods that fill you up - i.e. a plate of butternut squash has very little calories, but fills me up so I can't eat more than a couple oz of steak. Keeps the meal under 500 calories, but doesn't leave me hungry. Thanks for advice/motivation!
