Hi everyone!
It's a beautiful voting day. I voted this morning before going to my physical. I was so excited I lost 50 pounds! Doctor was ecstatic and changed my meds from januvia to metformin only. Only thing that kind of bummed me out is my cholesterol is high which may be a heredity thing. He gave me a statin which I really don't want to take but I may take it for awhile and eventually swap out some supplements that target this. I have to think about it. I will probably ask him before I do that since I know he will get mad if I just do it. I haven't read a single good thing about statins and so far I have refused to take them.

Well, on to the next goal!

Have a great FS Day everyone!

Happy! Happy! Happy for you. Except for the statins. I quit taking mine for awhile last winter and my cholesterol bounced thru the ceiling, so back on them. Darn it!

That is amazing congratulations. You will get your cholesterol in line. Many people (and me) believe doctor's too readily throw drugs at a problem. However, I think they do that with the belief that most people won't change their lifestyles. Use the statins as a bridge while you continue to get yourself healthy. I was able to get off my cholesterol medicine when I lost weight and was doing regular aerobic exercise. I have read a number of articles on the benefit of exercise to cholesterol. I know you are exercising so you are already getting yourself health - just keep cranking away. This is an outstanding accomplishment in about 7 months. Imagine where you will be in a year. Keep it up .. and keep posting it helps the rest of us.

Thanks everyone! I was pretty disappointed about the cholesterol but I have a lot of weight to lose still and I really just started exercising 2 months ago. Matt, I like what you said about it being a "bridge" - it helps me feel less disappointed and gives me hope that yeah, someday I can get off of that too. I do realize some people with certain heredity are stuck so I might be one of those. But I will keep on working at it!

Go to Dr. Mercola.com and listen to his lecture on statins. It will give you some food for thought. There's also something about two kinds of LDL's one dense and one fluffy, only one is bad, but on the typical test they show up as the same. Look into that too. My LDL was up, but my functional medicine Doc told me not to worry about it.

Way to go! That's wonderful news!

If you do decide to not take the medication let him know immediately. It's only fair to him since you are under his care. If your lipid panel was not ideal including ratios then you unfortunately need medication at this time. That's not to say that that can't change. Exercise, exercise and exercise + WOE will help those numbers drop especially your HDL and LDL. I think there is hope if stick to your guns and get this done!

I agree with Erika...do your research as we have also left the stations behind...when you see your doctor, you can then present your concerns etc. I did and our doctor said no sweat and took hubby off. And by the way congrats on the 50 pound loss and meds change...good for you!

Ny_shelly, I feel you about the statins because I took Simvastatin 20mg for 3 months and my Colesterol came down from 238 to 144, so Doc took me off for now and I'm watching my fried food intake. Good luck!

I know where you are coming from with statins, I stopped the medication 2 years ago and just got the courage to tell the Dr. Needless to say got the sermon, did blood test and told him I would go back on it if needed. I have a block artery in my right leg and he wants the cholesterol controlled. Good luck

Thanks everyone - I have to think about it some more. I have a book about lowering your cholesterol using NAC and a few other supplements. It's called the Cholesterol Cure. Also, I can start on some oat bran. I need to refer to that book and do some reading and maybe I will make another appointment with him to discuss.

Hubby takes red yeast rice and niacin. It has helped his cholesterol. He refuses to take statins.

Yes, dialogue with your physician about this. There is nothing wrong with telling your physician you would rather do another approach in regards to lowering your cholesterol. Definitely support that. Doing things without his knowledge isn't prudent; in fact it could be down right dangerous. Have that chat with him. :)

Well, I checked out Dr. Mercola! Wow, what a wealth of information. He sites 2 numbers - Trig / HDL < 2 (mine is 1.7) and HDL/ Total Cholesterol > 24 % (less than 10% is super bad) - mine was 14%. So I have some work to do! I have a lot of ideas and I will be researching Dr.l Mercola's suggestions as well. It is going to be more work for me to organize and make the dietary adjustments but I think I can do it. Thanks for all of the support FS Buds!

Awesome job on the weight loss. As you continue to lose you will probably be able to get rid of some medications.
