Hermiones Mom's Journal, 25 October 2016

Ok -- I do not know what to make of this weigh-in. All summer I exercised like crazy and lost maybe 2 pounds. Now, in the past 2 weeks, because of my injured shoulder, for a week the only exercise I got was minimal dog-walking, and this past week I've been walking a lot, but still... I spent half my time worrying about how to get my calories in down so I wouldn't gain weight. Now, I get on the scale and I'm down 3 pounds. How can that be? I even got off the scale and got back on again because I've learned sometimes this scale goes bananas when it needs new batteries, so if I get off and get back on, my weight will be completely different. This time I got off and on 3 times and my weight stayed at 154.8. So I guess I shouldn't complain. I just have to recommit and move forward, because I know full well that getting over the hump to the 140s will take weeks and weeks, so I have to prepare myself to be satisfied with every bit of progress I make. Last time my weight took a sudden drop of a few pounds, it went back up the following week, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I manage to hold this weight for a few weeks. Boy it would sure be nice to lose a couple more pounds before Thanksgiving, because I will almost certainly gain over the holidays -- it would be great to have a margin of error for the holiday season!
154.8 lb Lost so far: 79.2 lb.    Still to go: 12.8 lb.    Diet followed reasonably well.

And don't forget about the theory about muscle holding more water than fat. Is it possible that without your workouts you could be losing some muscle? What would the effect be? I don't know how it actually works. Good for you for walking the dog. When I'm in pain, forget it, couch heaven for me.

Sarah1950 -- I just can't imagine I could have lost that much muscle in 2 weeks. It makes no sense to me -- but then it didn't make any sense to me that I was not losing when I was exercising like crazy and calories in was lower than calories out. It's all very mysterious -- but then, I go back to what I have always said: Keep doing what you're doing and as long as the trend is downward, it doesn't matter how long it takes. I'm healthy, I'm losing and that's all that matters.

Whatever the mystery is, it is a happy one. Congratulations on the loss - whatever the reason! :)

When you crack the mystery of the scale, please let us all know what it is. Sometimes there just is no clear explanation.

I think with your exercise out of the picture temporarily, you focused on diet. I lost my first 45 with zero exercise. Congrats!

Thanks folks -- I actually went from 234 down to 185 with the only exercise being walking the dogs, and in really cold winter weather, that walking was pretty limited, so FiveTwoCowboy, I know what you mean about focusing on diet. It wasn't until I hit the 170s that I began to walk really seriously, and then over last winter was when I started skating and going to the gym. I just had a lot more energy that I'd had before, and I've found it's self-perpetuating: The more energy I have, the more eager I am to exercise, and the nore I exercise, the better I feel. I know everyone tells you this, but I think when you have been very heavy for a long time, you can't really accept that you will feel so different as the weight comes off, especially since if you are as heavy as I was, it takes some time before weight loss has a positive impact. Anyway, I'm going to keep at it and just look for that graph to keep going down.

being Ill makes the body work harder to get well, perhaps that's the answer? your body is using up calories in the healing process maybe.

It is interesting what you have surmised about your weight loss and feeling more energy to do things. It is true. Thanks for sharing that ... I needed to hear it and realize why I am feeling less than energetic these days.
