Dear Fellow Travelers!
I'm sending you a quote and a link from a wonderful site called Brain Pickings. It's a literary site that I love and I hope you will too, that explores books by topic. This one is germane to our recent discussions about compassion.

The Difficult Art of Self-Compassion
"Compassion," wrote historian Karen Armstrong in considering the proper meaning of the Golden Rule, "asks us to look into our own hearts, discover what gives us pain, and then refuse, under any circumstance whatsoever, to inflict that pain on anybody else." In her beautiful ode to compassion, Lucinda Williams urged: "Have compassion for everyone you meet … You do not know what wars are going on down there, where the spirit meets the bone."

And yet even the most compassionate among us have one sizable blind spot: the self. Our culture's epidemic of self-criticism has left us woefully unskilled at self-compassion — that essential anchor of sanity, which both grounds and elevates our spirit.

Thanks, Erika! Those kids you teach who are in difficult circumstances must learn so much from you and feel supported and valuable. That's a wonderful thing. Thanks for helping society out by helping the troubled kids and for sharing your compassion with all of us!

Well, we have some rather negative modes of operation left over from the protestant and puritan cultures. Unrelenting self-criticism, unrelenting work ethic, perfectionism, ironically a complete lack of forgiveness to self or others, hyper-responsiblity with no credence to external factors, the idea of an inherent meritocracy/justice in life... etc... The stuff of neuroticism. If you like karen armstrong as an author, she did a wonderful write up on the history of religion, following how it evolved and assimilated across cultures over time . It's called ' A history of god'.

Nice Erika! That is one of my most sacred standards! The Golden Rule and giving just as much love and compassion to yourself as you apply to others. Great post!
