Hi everyone - a few days ago a few people suggested IF and to look up Jason Fung on YouTube. I am convinced - he seems like an amazing guy. I also watched videos by Mike Lara and Daniel Pompa. I have been eating low carb enough and also studied the material enough to decide that this is the end of insulin for me. I take Janumet which is on Dr. Fungs acceptable diabetes meds list..Januvia plus metformin. I will increase my insulin sensitivity with IF (Intermittent Fasting). I have been monitoring my BS and so far it is fine.
I was so concerned about only keeping the blood sugar reading below 100 I never considered the ill effect of shooting more insulin into my body.
Most doctors are not able to handle patients like me who do their own research and make changes and choices on their own. Mine gets majorly p.o.'d. Next month for my physical I hope to be nearly 35 pounds lighter and off insulin I will hand him the special gift I have (my collection of 5 books about binge eating and IF) and maybe he will kick me out or keep an open mind about it.
Doctors arent too crazy about self-diagnosers but I am a smart person and I can read and understand the test data and make my own decisions. Jason Fung and others present similar results of the benefits of IF and it makes total sense.
I did a 500 calorie fast yesterday. I didnt quite make 500..I was almost 600. It was hard but I wasnt dying. It turned out to be about an 18 hour fast (dinner to breakfast). I am still reading about it and learning the ropes on the most effective type. I would prefer to eat 500 calories on fast days but I dont know if that counts as a fast.
I am really excited about the benefits I read about IF and I feel like I have a really interesting journey ahead of me!

Awesome for you! Once you get the hang of IF, you'll be amazed at the lack of hunger. Friday through yesterday, I went about 30 hours before I realized I hadn't eaten! LCHF+IF is an amazing combo.

Yes, we are our own "Doctors" when it comes to diet & nutrition, since most Dr's are no longer trained in either Nutrition or diet (and never did get much training in these area's!), yet alone the complex issues that result when eating the 'normal' american corporate diet. Drugs and surgery are most of the choices that they have. Good for you!!! :) (Drugs and surgery are both big money makers, what a coincidence. )

Just watched a podcast with Dr. Fung on insulin, keto and IF. It was a Keto Summit podcast. What grabbed my attention was it wasn't necessarily carbs but how those carbs and the glycemic load affected your insulin levels. The GIANTS may be high Ishmael but through GLUZBERG was low it wouldn't shoot your insulin levels up there. That was my take away.

That may have been me. I was saying that you might find it helpful to do the 5:2 fasting protocol. You eat to satiety (anything you want) on 5 days of the week, and fast, under 500 Kcal/day for 2 non-consecutive days. It works for some folks. For me, I LOVE the bonuses that staying in ketosis all the time. The anti-inflammatory nature of the diet, combined with the mental clarity is enough to keep me going.

That was me NY. I deleted my own comment so I wouldn't get updates from this post in case it turned into a "stupidfest". I saw the unnecessary one and I scroll past it even when it's on someone's post I enjoy (like yours, sorry)! I see you're up on the process and well informed. I had referred to my 5:2 beginning in April and how I added the 16:8 after a few weeks once I got the 5:2 down pat. My suggestion was to not "turn all the dials at once" in the beginning. Good luck and, oh yeah, the mental clarity and increased energy are part of the 5:2 as well. Perhaps it's a shared byproduct of just living healthier!

Drag list and Shelley, how are you doing the protein? Was on his site and read the lower protein, 50 g. If I do .5g of lbm I am at 57g. I am the type I could live on meat and nothing else. Looking back over weight history and food chart, guess what? I lost when my protein was lower. That shocked me. Going back and forth about buying his book or gleaning from his website.

@Cowboy LOL I thought I was hallucinating - I read your post and then poof it was gone. Thanks for reposting! For 5:2 are you guys sticking to 600 calories on fasting days? That is my understanding of those days. (For women, 500 calories) And then you added 16:8 to eat all of your calories in 8 hours for a 16 hour fast. Do I have those two concepts right? Recently I bought a Fat Bomb cookbook but I haven't gotten around to making anything yet b/c there are some ingredients I need to get. My protein has been around 25% which is about 93 grams for 1500 calories.

That's right. On my "2", I eat as late in the day as possible but not after 7 p.m. My "5" is usually wrapped up by 6. I can't imagine eating before noon anymore and I've always been a big breakfast guy (yep)! Good luck NY.

In reading back, I do not know how the Giants gluzberg phrase came in. The only thing I can think of is auto correct. If the glycemic load is low it won't shoot up the insulin levels as much, even if glycemic index is on the high side. Take away for me is look at the glycemic load of a carb. What it actually does to your insulin.

Ny_Shelly slide on over to DietDoctor.com and you will see Dr. Fung has Teamed up with Dr. Enfeld from Sweden and they present a remarkable case for LCHF (Low Carb High Fat) and IF. My daughter and I have been doing the 5/2 LCHF with IF on weekends with one exception we stop eating at 7:00 pm Friday night and resume eating on Monday at Noon. We basically fast 36 straight hours and rather then bother with the 500 suggested IF calories we take 1 Bulletproof Coffee each morning and a small piece of Creamed coconut to keep any hunger urges away. So far I have lost 101 pounds since Jan 3, 2016 and my daughter has lost 84. I was a 2 injection insulin user, 3,000 mg of Metformin, 100 mg of Januvia and 240 mg of Gliclazide daily. I was able to toss all Diabetes medication after 6 weeks on LCHF and we have even incorporated 2 10 day fasts over the past 60 days. One thing I will say about LCHF that is different from the other 10 diets I have tried is I am never hungry and I never have the urge to cheat and not cheating on a diet in 9 solid months is an achievement. I like you do self diagnosis and I could care less what my 3 specialist have to say as I am convinced Modern Medicine wants us Fat, Insulin Resistant and on Drugs. They do not have all the answers and only one of my Doctors actually asked me what I was doing to lose the weight and to keep up the good work. I you want to wave goodbye to Diabetes or Insulin Resistance LCHF needs to be your new way of life. Best of luck!

Yeah, I'm sold. I am not adapted yet and still learning the right foods for my 500 days so right now I am pretty darn hungry and I am not feeling 100%. I am going to follow this method until I get it right. Thank you for everyone's input. @Joe I did see Dr Fung on DietDoctor - that's where I first watched him and realized he is amazing!

You may be experiencing the effects of 'keto flu', Shelly. As your glycogen stores are depleted, you go through withdrawal symptoms, and it can be pretty unpleasant. Hang in there, though! On the other side is a feeling so good, you'll wonder how you made it through the day, before. There is some interesting new research being done on the insulin impact of foods vs. the glycemic impact. Interestingly, they are not the same. Some of the foods that are high on the glycemic index actually are pretty low on the insulin index.
