No kidney failure, I think that's an urban myth. Kidney failure can't be caused by diet but by injury, medication or dehydration. However, Atkins is delicious but it's very easy to go way over your calorie intake - good luck (I do love the Caesar dressing recipe, best I've ever tasted), I hope it works for you.

Good luck, and you need not worry about kidney failure (yeesh). Kidneys have a harder time dealing with excess weight/diabetes than a lowcarb diet! It's important to stay hydrated, of course, and I do recommend ensuring you get adequate fiber. Anyway, while I no longer do it myself, for about half my weight loss history, I did so with success. I credit Atkins for (back in the 90s) spurring my interest in dietary fats, breaking old food patterns, trying new substitutions/recipes - many tricks I still use today, even if I no longer go lowcarb in a strict sense. I eventually DID have to start counting calories as I got down to a certain size and these days feel better with an IIFYM approach where I keep things at certain %s. Still, no regrets as it served me well at the time. Hope you get on well with it!
