My biggest diet challenge is metabolizing more of what I eat and then burn it by increasing my daily activity. As a diabetic with a few co-morbid attachments, it is not altogether that easy. There is a lot of resistance. Unlike the Borg in Star Trek, resistance is not futile but very difficult. Some of the resistance comes form aging. I'll be sixty in a month. I know that every body is not the same. We live with the genes we get. Learning to live with changes that go with those genes is based on my daily physiology. Keep it simple, try not to take anything too serious and enjoy life as it is. While this may even be too philosophical to some, for me living in the present is more important than loosing a single pound of weight. I want to know I tried my best without I having to feel I had to be perfect.

Thinking Beyond The Type of Diabetics:

I divide Diabetes in two parts that includes a type 1 or 2. Those two parts are the disease itself and those things caused by the disease called co-morbids.

About the the first part, my belief is Keep It Simple. Learning about being a diabetic is living as a diabetic. This is no simple task. Ask any diabetic. It's been a few years since when I was first October 2005 to learn as much as I know. I am still learning more, sometimes daily.

The second part is learning about the related problems diabetes causes and how an individual like myself treats them. Some diets cannot work for their diabetic diets and also the related problems in the same way. For instance, some diets are bad for a person who has severe Congestive Heart Disease and diabetes. The low or no carbohydrate diet might cause an explosive heart problem too. There has to be some understanding about how to treat the one and the other differently but both at the same time. This is complicated because everyone with both problems is different to how they can approach them. The bottom line is this all takes time to learn and digest (no pun) even so, it can be done.

I do pretty good with my diet(s). While I haven't lost any significant weight, I haven't gained either. My weight history goes up and down like a toilet seat! I loose 3 to 5 pounds every single day. This "water weight" is caused by Congestive Heart Failure (CHF). It killed my dad when he was only 49 and my maternal grandfather when he was only 43. I made it beyond them by more than 10 years because of early disease detection and taking those marvelous drugs like Lasix, "The Pee Pill." So, I urinate daily 2 to 5 pounds of water and my net weight loss/gain is zero.

On the other hand, diabetes causes my insatiable appetite and I feel severe thirst almost all the time. I can't stop drinking, water, lemonade, soups, sugarless juices, in a word - liquids. I even chew ice until it's a liquid. The result is CHF. The large amount of fluids cannot metabolize because my diabetes doesn't metabolize glucose well. And there you have it. When I can't breath well at night, I sit up for hours sleeping so that the fluids can drain away from my lungs, (signs of congestion). From the lack of oxygen lost in my lungs and lack of rest sitting up over the night by morning, I am too tired to do anything except to continue to rest. Therefore, I am not metabolizing or being as active as I should.

All Is Not Lost:

This describes in part some of the conflicts between diabetes and CHF, which is just one of those co-morbid problems I have. I also have hope. I do not plan living forever. If I expire in the next hour, I have already lived a good, useful and exciting life. That's why if there is anything I can do to continue living that quality of existence, I will live it to the best of my abilities. I owe that to my Maker, myself and to all the people I love and who love me. My family, friend and enemies know me for who I am. Which ever the case may be, they are part of my life - the Zen of it all.

Thus, my basic case for Bariatric Bypass/RNY Surgery is if nothing else comes from it, I will loose weight.
