Today has been a superb day – sunshine and blue skies if a little windy. We drove up into the Lammermuir hills, walked the dog and had a picnic lunch in a sunny hollow. Springers have very good noses and Ollie’s didn’t leave the floor for a moment. He must have covered twice the ground I did and even fell in the stream not looking where he was going. (Wet smelly fur all the way home) It’s a proper spring day. Mother Nature has done her job well - everything had got its new outfit on. The new leaves are every green from almost yellow, through lime green onto deep green and then to the almost black of the Scots and Norwegian pines. There’s just the Oak, Beech and Ash to come. The dead ash keys hanging on the bare trees made fantastic music in the wind. We passed banks of bright yellow gorse and the dandelions along the grass verge looked so pretty. Wonder why they don’t look so good in the veggie patch! Cottage gardens were full of vibrant orange Berberis and every color Tulip available.

On the eating front, we took our lunch with us – crispy salad and my favorite skinless and boneless sardines - all washed down with a cup of coffee and followed by an apple. I resisted the temptation to buy an ice-cream or chocolate on the way home and so am feeling proud of myself.

Walking wasn’t as long as usual, but it was very hilly and windy and I only had a sweater on. I was surprised at how I could walk up the hills. This time last year I wouldn’t even have attempted it. The grass is very springy and moor like and there are patches of heather which are all cropped by the sheep which roam freely on the roads, kept in by cattle grids. The little lambs were so sweet. There were tiny spring flowers in the grass and I found some tiny white anemones with flowers no bigger than my little finger nail.

This has definitely lifted my spirits and restored my ‘joie de vivre’. Long may it last.
