Why is it that when gaining weight, instead of loosing it== people trivialize it? No I do not want a pity party- but I do not want people say.. "Oh it is just water--" or "oh don't worry bout it, there is nothing to worry bout!" I got this reaction at work today...(No I am not talking bout the advice of "look how far you have come-" actually that helps to focus on the 'right' things)..
But gaining six pounds in two days..is nothing to make light of either..
sorry still kind of bummed..

First: if you are doing this then stop: do not weigh yourself everyday...weight yourself once a week the same day and time. Me I weigh in after a shower first thing Monday morning. Then look at monthly avg. weight loss. I hate the water weight comment because it means that person may not know enough to really comment. 3 days ago I weighed 4 pounds more than I did this morning..Hence why I normally weigh in once a week but wanted to see where I was at before I started a new work out program. Maybe you just need to take a dump..seriously certain foods stay in your body longer than others...so do a once a week weigh at the end of a month..or 4.333 weeks see where you are at. if your weight still went up over all then check your eating habits. Remember pending on how you are working out you may actually need to add calories as you will need fuel to burn fuel...hope this helps

I meant to say: so do a once a week weigh in in your birthday suite same time same day.. Mornings are good because at night you have a stomach full of food you have been eating all day. then look at your monthly overall weight.

I think most people are just trying to be kind by pointing out that it could be something than overeating. Sometimes it IS water weight. If you over ate and gained, all you can do is suck it up and move on. Yes, it sucks. We all do it at some point. If you don't know why, then you go through your journal to see where it might have come from. Just stay on plan and keep going. Losing weight is HARD!

I'm not trying to trivialize this but you DO realize this is probably mostly water weight, right? You have injured your knee. I'm willing to bet that more than half of that addl weight is water surrounding the injury trying to protect it. You've done the knee thing before and you know that. Yes, 6 pounds is disheartening. But it's 6 pounds that will be gone relatively quickly when the knee issue is resolved. In the meantime, have you done a search for exercises for people with bad knees? Even better (to me anyway!) do you have a local pool available and time in your schedule to get there? My creaky knee loves the pool.

You will get those 6 pounds off. I know you will. That exact "no big deal" message is the message I received at the group meetings I attended as a FORMER member of one of the world's largest & well know weight loss organizations. I became SO CONFUSED and did not understand why my "counselors" were telling me that it was "okay" to gain 6 pounds in a week. Admittedly, I became suspicious of the organization's representatives who advised me to lose weight more slowly than 2 pounds a week. One more week in the program meant one more $10 a week fee. I am doing MUCH BETTER now. Sometimes you are all you've got. Be your own best friend and listen to those POSITIVE "onward ho" messages you have for yourself. Losing and gaining weight is a big deal and you are doing GREAT, my friend! Keep the faith!

look, if you gained 6 pounds over two weeks sure but think about this....a pound is the equivalent of 3500 calories. So a six pound gain means that you ate 21,000 calories over and above your maintenance numbers. Did you really eat that much over maintenance? Think about it. That is why people trivialize gains in a short period of time. Because it usually is water. so for example, for me, maintenance is currently at 1900 calories. (I'm eating 1700 to cut) I would have to eat 1900 calories times 7 plus 21000 calories to put on six legitimate pounds. While I probably have eaten that in the past, at this point in my life, I really don't think I could pack that way unconsciously without being aware on a level of exactly what I am doing.

I know how you feel. I keep jumping up and down. Then when I've weighed in at YMCA, I discovered that it was the scale that I've got. Be sure and drink that water. Watch every thing. I'm sure that you are, but just reiterating for you. I'm here for you.

Good information from Alex. I will have to remember that for myself. I've noticed that my weight will sometimes go up for a day or two before I drop again. I've been told that when you lose fat, the cells fill themselves up with water first before they flush. I don't know if it's true, but makes sense. I weigh myself every day too for my heart -- have to watch my fluids. If I go up over 2 lbs in a day, I know I have to take a fluid pill. You could probably add lemon juice to your water and restrict your sodium and carbs for a few days, and it would help. I agree you would be hard pressed to actually gain that much weight that quickly.
