Johanne's Journal, 12 December 2010

It actually IS cold now. Last night the wind chill was -20. I have my thermal undies on and the heat hasn't turned off all day. I have it set for 68. The front walls of my house are radiating cold air. Fortunately, my house is an "earth contact" (when I was a kid, we called them basements) so three sides are mostly under ground. I'm sure that's helping some. We didn't have much snow, but with 50 mph wind gusts, we have some pretty amazing snow sculptures surrounding wind swept, bare earth.

My food choices for the last few days have been bizarre. I'm not sure what's wrong. I'm staying under my RDI for the most part but when I do eat, I'm eating all wrong. I'm craving something and haven't figured out what it is yet. I bought the fixings for smoked turkey, cannellini soup today. It has potatoes, carrots and herbs in it. I'm hoping that's enough different from what I've been eating to perk up my taste buds.

Hello Johanne, I'm seeing some of the weather fronts building up on the evening news. Hope it doesn't get too bad for you. I'm also struggling with some strange behavior regarding eating patterns. I just got back down under goal weight only to overdo things again today. This time of the year is particularly hard for us all. Hang in there!

Hey, Jo, it is so cold here too (you guys in the KC area are colder than we are, my son says it is brutal)....the kitchen walls had condensation on them yesterday when we were making dinner! BRRRRR. All the animals are tucked in, with heaters running, so they should be okay. Stay warm dear lady and hope that your soup turns out well...it sounds YUMMY!!!

Info, I just can't figure it out. The weirdest thing is, with all the HFCS I had yesterday, my fasting glucose was only 99 this morning. Today's a new day. I'm hoping to do better. Steph, I have ice forming on the INSIDE of my double pane windows. You wouldn't know I have central heating. Velcro jumped through the hole in the screen this morning, hit the snow bank and just stood there in shock. I don't know if he remembers snow from last year. He was young. It was very funny. Needless to say, he jumped back in just as fast. Emma was much smarter. She can smell it. She never got off her cushy bench. I think she may have been laughing at him. I'm off to have coffee and put on my pot of soup. Everyone stay warm and try to hold down those weird cravings.

It's not cold here in the Northwest, but the whole place is about to go underwater from the constant torrents of rain. Of course, I'd rather have the rain than the subzero temperatures.

I think I would love to live in Washington or Oregon. I think I could handle the whole "rain forest" thing really well. It's so beautiful there.
