Yesterday, my son broke his ankle skateboarding. (On my buddy Sharons birthday as well!! I definitely wont forget the date in a hurry now!)

I try to focus on the positive so here is my positives from that incident:

-I dont have a car and I knew he wouldnt be able to get home without help so I had to call an acquaintance. I have only met her once in the eight months I have been here but she didnt hesitate in coming immediately. So I found a good friend in her.

-His broken ankle means him relying on me more but I am the nurturing type so it gives me an opportunity/excuse to baby my baby without him feeling embarassed (no more..dude you're embarassing me with your pampering!)

-I was thinking of going home to London this summer but the cost was holding me back. Now I have the perfect excuse for not going. I cant leave my baby behind and he wont be able to do anything with a cast on!

-Mini tragedies such as these always help people bond more. I think he is appreciative of the way I leapt to his rescue and had the presence of mind to call a friend (instead of my initial instinct of running all the way to him!) I also didnt nag him about the whole incident and just took the whole situation into perspective, that accidents happen. (Unlike his dad, who has now banned him from skating forever!!)

-It could have been much worse. He is in a lot of pain, a cast and crutches. BUT-he will get better in a few weeks thankfully. Fortunately, its nothing permanent or life debilitating.

I have a lot to be grateful for.

You HAVE kept this in perspective. Great job resisting the urge to freak out. I am a stress-case in my own life but in an emergency I am (or appear to be) the most even-tempered person around. Good job looking at the bright side, though I'm sure your son will have a hard time doing so. You're right, though, it is NOT permanent.

Great job on keeping calm and cool Mom! Your son surely appreciated it even if he didn't realize how you could have reacted otherwise. Yes, accidents do happen and you just gotta roll with it.

You are such a good mommy!!! I love that you were able to keep this all in perspective. I think we all need a little reality check sometimes and I'm so glad for you that you are able to see the good in the tragedy - although it's an inconvenience, you may have a really good time with your little boy again!!

Way to handle a crisis with grace under pressure! There really are silver linings to every cloud so good for you for finding so many positive aspects to this unfortunate situation. I hope your son's pain subsides soon and wish him a speedy recovery.

Women are so much more reasonable about children's accidents, good for you for keeping everything in perspective!! My sister broke her thigh bone on the trampoline and ended up in traction for 3 months when she was 8, and even though it was very hard and took a huge toll on Mom, she realized that it was just a stupid accident. My sister's father, on the other hand, sold the trampoline while she was in the hospital (even though HE wasn't the one at the hospital 24/7 like Mom, or even CLOSE to that!!!!)
