TJSloan's Journal, 06 March 2018

I'm never sure what to type/say here. I've never been good at keeping a diary/journal. I even started one for both of my nieces, where I just write the things I feel/think at that time, how proud I am of them, the choices they have made, how strong they are. That type of thing. However, I think I have only done 1 entry in both journals. The idea is when I'm gone, the journals will be given to them. I'm not good about writing just in general my thoughts and feelings. When I get upset, or things start weighing on me, then yeah, I write pages, only to turn around and destroy those pages a few days later. It's therapy for me.

I'm not a patient person, and I'm not good at denying myself things that I want. Therefore the "diets" that I choose are basically all things in moderation. I get discouraged easily, thinking things should be happening faster than they are, basically, I'm not seeing results fast enough. I stay the course for a few months, then I get bored with it, I grow tired of watching every little thing I put in my mouth, of telling myself I can't have what I really want, pretending the premiere protein cookies n cream shakes will suffice and cure my cravings for something sweet. After a while, all the artificially sweetened things coat the back of my tongue with a thick layer of sweetness that turns my stomach and makes me want a sprite to kill that artificial taste. I grow tired of eating veggies, because in truth, there's only a few that I really like, and eating them all the time, make me not want them, or makes me grow bored with food, because it's the "same ol' same ol'"

I grow tired of drinking water, and I don't like the taste of diet drinks. I don't like the bitter taste of ice tea without sugar, but although I am a southerner, I do not like my tea syrupy sweet either. Maybe half a cup of sugar to a gallon of tea. But if I make tea, then it's gone that night, and I have to make it every day, and I grow tired of doing that. I sound lazy, even to me. I just get bored with doing the same thing over and over and over again.

I know I didn't become diabetic and overweight over night, and I know I won't become non-diabetic and back to a healthy weight over night, but damn! It was a lot easier getting this way that it is to become healthy again. Trust me, I wish I was as fat now, as I thought I was at 18, when I barely weighed 115 pounds at 5'10.

Me,too! All of it! 3 pages is as far as I get on a journal. I am more of a facts and plans writer, not so much feelings.

We must be related somehow lol! I am the worst at journaling anything for more than a few days then I get tired of keeping track. This whole description is me also. Just keep trying until you find what works for you.

I'm so glad to see I'm not the only one. So much of the time, I feel like I am. lol! I am going to keep trying, there's nothing much left to do. I don't like taking medications and I want off them...eventually, I will succeed, this I know. :-)

Can't agree with you more. You are definitely not alone. All we can do is keep trying and find what really motivates you. I got into a weight loss challenge group where all put in some mildly significant amount of money - and because there are so many of us, the pot for the top 3 is quite significant. Even with that, whole I managed to stop gaining, including over the holidays, I was not really loosing either. But then I started having back problems and that and a last ditch push to try to make second or third place in our contest has me here again... And it got me serious enough to start food journaling and excercising - so have to just find that motivation and keep it in mind as you go forward. Good Luck and keep on pushing!

Seems to me that was a pretty darn good journal entry! Yes, I hear you about our body images...I too thought I was "fat" when I was younger. Amazing how we get these false impressions of ourselves. Hang in there.

Have you tried varying your veggies or trying different recipes with new seasonings you haven't tried? It doesn't have to be boring to diet. It's also your willingness to diet. Do you want to live longer? Don't give in to your human easy way out thinking.

Keeping a journal can be daunting when you haven't done it before. What you wrote is wonderful and well written! Keeping a journal here can be as much or as little as you want to write. It doesn't have to be public if you don't want it to be. I find that keeping it public allows the wonderful people here to reach out with their support and ideas. Believe me, if someone is not interested in reading what you write, they won't. You will find the ones that do can have the same feelings as you do and often some great ideas for you. It doesn't have to be a novel to help yourself and help others along the way as well! :) Patience is not my thing either!!!!!

As for the veggies, I am trying to have salad or raw veggies every day. I also try to have a hot vegetable also, and my friend makes a salad that is lettuce chopped up small like an inch square, with all kinds of other things chopped small. He puts in orange pieces, shallots, minced garlic, grapes, carrots, celery - basically whatever he has in the fridge so that the lettuce is say 4 cups to the 1 cup of mix-ins. Then top with a squeeze of lemon and a pinch of salt and pepper. I always tried to get him to buy salad dressing, but all he ever gave me was nasty store-brand italian vinaigrette from a bottle so I skipped having dressing. This method of salad making is very handy - you can eat it with a spoon and it tastes different every time. It could be a way to try new ways to eat new veggies and you can always have a nice salad dressing handy if the flavors aren't perfect. Good luck!

There is a lot of conflicting diet advice out there, and it can be daunting. Most of the people here on Fat Secret will support your decisions and offer to help, so you are in the right place! (I am working on not being pushy when I try to help.) I just reached the 20# lost milestone. It took four months, but the consistency of the loss and the ease of this WOE propel me to continue.

I get tired of water too. I try not to eat/drink any artificial sweeteners, and I have found LaCroix sparkling water . It has lots of flavors, and no artificial sweeteners. It's kind of expensive though. I also like Seltzer water and get it in the 2 Liters, then put some fresh lemon and lime in it.

All of these are good ideas, that I will have to write down and try. My husband, bless his heart, he eats and likes everything. One of our favorite ways to do veggies, is to grill them with a bit of minced garlic and butter. Yes, I do real butter. But we also have grape seed oil as well as olive oil at the house that we use too. We don't fry much of anything. I don't care for brussel sprouts, but I have found that sliced and grilled with dad's seasoned salt, garlic and a touch of butter, they are palatable. And if the grill isn't working, we just throw 'em in the oven and cook them that way. I'm going to have to start trying new things, and those that I don't particularly care for, keep trying until I'm at least ok with it. Thanks yall!

You can eat whatever you want, as long as you’re in a weekly calorie deficit you will lose fat. Don’t sacrifice foods you enjoy that’ll only make dieting harder, more frustrating, more stressful, and that won’t do anything but raise those cortisol levels (“stress hormone”) which will make losing fat harder to do. “Pepper” in the foods you enjoy or “snack” foods etc through the week, just make sure your calories are not in excess and you’ll be fine.

Has anyone tried freezing those premier protein shakes like ice cream? I dont drink them, but i have had one and it might make good ice cream?

they make jello freezer pops which are usually low in calories, just add a scoop of protein powder to one and have a protein jello pop. Although I haven’t tested that idea, just thought of it, soook dunno how the consistency will hold up and you’ll either end up with an awesome pop or mush 😜

I don't know if I'm "journaling" here or not, but it's the only place I've ever been able to post freely. Sometimes, it's less, sometimes, it's more. This sounds random, but over the holidays I looked at these cute little 3x5 cards that had thoughts on them, in beautiful script, of course, but the sayings were meaningful. Maybe committing the messages you want to leave your nieces in a less formal medium than a full journal would be an easier start? It doesn't have to be perfect, but it might let you let go of whatever is making this hard for you to put to paper? As for the water/tea/liquid conundrum, I use "Water Drops" I get on Amazon. They have stevia in them and you can use as much or as little as you want. I don't like super sweet stuff (and I'm cheap), so a little squeeze to take the edge off plain, flat water is all I need. Try the variety pack to figure out which one is your fave. You can also add it to tea. Personally, the peach is a little too sweet for me, but I know a lot of people that loves them some peach flavored sweet tea. Add it after the tea has cooled so it doesn't break down the taste. I haven't tried it in hot tea at all.
