Yearofhealth2023's Journal, 25 April 2024

Met with nutritionist today for 60 minutes. Takeaway: high LDL may be (although genetic factors) due to repetitive trauma over past 18 months. Repetitive surgery and long recovery on last one with 11 hour anesthesia time not great. Also carbs can contribute tho not in my case. I had never heard carbs were a problem with LDL. If too high of a quantity  She is sending me a summary of our visit and recommendations tomorrow. Specifically she is concerned with my biome health, bio-availability and probiotics from non dairy sources as i have struggled with healthy bowel movements since altering my diet and cutting out the high fat foods in July 2022. Im managing to get something out every day so I didn’t realize im seriously close to a bigger problem. Given my mom struggled with bowels, had to have a bowel resection when she was a couple of years older than me and struggled for decades till her passing i guess it shouldn’t be so surprising. What is surprising is that eating crappy i had no issues. So thats my takeaway from today’s appt. Follow up in a month.

Good info YOH. I struggle with high LDL which statins aren't putting much a dent into, and that aside from a couple of minor slips in the last 13 months I have been eating clean. HDL still low, LDL still high.

I ate like crap for approx 2 hrs following a difficult move across the country. I gained 20 pounds and ate more french fries and tartar sauce than I'll ever admit. This year I finally decided to get back on track with eating better. I started slow by cutting down on the worst things. All okay, still gaining weight. Continuing on to add healthy food like kale and mango smoothies. That's when s**t got weird! Awful symptoms, nausea, headaches, bloating, etc. Felt better eating like crap! lol I think my gut needs some friends! I'm trying probiotics. Too soon to tell but hopefully it helps!

Well that is interesting. Hopefully the nutritionist can get you regular so you won't have to have a resection!

RPL im telling you. I currently am taking 16 supplements (including one that is progesterone..estrogen and testosterone are topical) and the idea of adding more is a bit daunting. It’s like a meal when i take all those pills, especially the omegas. Blood draw is Monday lab review 3rd week of may so interesting to see what it says. Im not holding my breath on those damn LDL numbers tho as i was last time. I have always been a lot healthier than my mom probably because i always worked out and tried to eat well for most of my adulthood with derailments here and there. Mom lived her life with loads of sugar and fat and zero exercise after she hit her 40’s. she did like tomato’s tho, that was her one healthy food but rarely eaten. When i cleaned out her frig after she passed she had something like 20 pints and 1/2 gallons of HAGGEN dasz a big block of tillamook cheddar cheese and probably the same 24 ensure’s I bought for her years ago. Just how she was. When she was a kid she would take a cup of sugar to her room and just eat it raw. Family lore😂

Wonderful! This is a major step in a good direction! We are what we eat...and i had no idea that I didn't know what I didn't know. We have been eating from day one, so it is very easy to believe we have it all figured out. A second set of eyes are invaluable. I also meet (teleconference as she's in Florida) with my nutritionist once a month. We go over my FatSecret entries together and she gives me pointers I'm all to often too stubborn to change. Don't be stubborn like me.

I have problems remembering everything too. Maybe we need to take a tape recorder.

I find having a nutritionist has been such an asset to me in losing the weight and maintaining my current weight. She helped me so much! I learned so much about the effects foods have on my body, how I tolerate different foods, and what WOE is best for me. My nutritionist is so knowledgeable and adapts my nutritional needs to what has been happening to me medically and with my fitness level. I know what you mean about trying to remember all they say. I used to take notes at the beginning. Now that we only meet once a month it's not necessary. I'm so glad you are going this route. I hope you will find going to her is helpful. For me it wasn't just helpful, it was a game changer!🩷

Yippee learn from your past mistakes and change. We are all always evolving. You will keep feeling better and better and one day BAM you will be light on your feet. For instance, she asked me if was willing to incorporate fermented foods for gut health and im like depends…sauerkraut? That’s a hard no. She said pickles i said yes but pickles torment me on the scale with sodium. Well apparently all pickles are not created nutritionally equal. She had me buy bubbies. She said some pickles are cooked to death and others are fermented. Im willing to give it a try even tho my inner fat kid is saying noooooo i like vlasic pickles.

Morticia she is sending me a summary of our appt today so hopefully that reminds me of entire convo. But not a bad idea.

Diana, trying to wrap my head around decades of chicken breast, sweet potato or rice and something green is a meal and the best way to eat not being the ONLY way to give your body the proper nutrition. Like, who ever heard you can eat too much fruit? I dont eat much but hubs eats a TON. We were trying to figure out why his LDL was climbing and nutritionist said probably from the massive amount of food he eats daily. He goes thru 4-5 cantaloupes a week same amount in honeydew and 1 pineapple a week, 14-20 apples a week and 14 or more bananas, 1ish cup of 50/50 spring mix and a few baby carrots and a pickle are his veg and 9 egg whites a day supplemented by several build bars and a protein shake daily . He has done this for years and years. Same food daily. Always thought minus the processed build bars he ate so clean. His only true processed food is a few tortilla chips and salsa. Learn something new any time we are open to it no matter how old we are right.

Diana i meant massive amount of fruit he eats not food😂

Wow! How can he consume that much food!? Also when I first started going to nutritionist and we talked about what I was eating, I couldn't understand why I wasn't losing weight because most of my food included lots of fruit and starchy foods like rice! I was so naive! I rarely ate meat either. When I got serious about lifting it took me a long minute to get used to eating 100 grams of protein. I still struggle sometimes to get in mostly unprocessed protein. I learned so much from my nutritionist! I stay away from most simple carbs. They really do effect my joints. I feel so much better when I eat a wholesome diet.

Diana, well he works out nearly 7 days a week. In addition to the walking with me he runs 7,8-10 miles about 3x a week and, when not injured, does a 45 minute HIIT workout or alternatively lifts for about an hour or so. Until 2 years ago he ran about 40 miles a week and lifted 6-7 days a week for a couple hours. Getting him to slow down to the hiit workouts has been a major feat. He also gets injured more now in his 40’s than in his 20-30’s. Neither of us really cook tho, except he will grill chicken so thats probably part of it and he wont eat bad food (well super rarely). He wont let me put cheese on eggs if i make egg whites and so on. He used to do the cut and bulk — bulk in winter up to 2-208 and cut in sprint and summer down to 190 but he is stabilized at 183 or so past couple years and he likes the smaller size and the way his body feels and his abs are ridiculous. We rarely go out to eat so his calories are around 2400 i think we figured even with all that fruit. He is learning about himself thru my journey with my health a little bit. He is very anti-medical community since his daddy passed away 9 years ago. Getting him to go to PT for his shoulder was a major multi-month event. Now of course he is glad he went.

Check out you tube channel Dr Berg vids on constipation, magnesium and keto diet for beginners. Adding good healthy fat helps to move bowels.

id suggest probiotic supplements but 16?? in one day?? i dont think you want a 17th. i used to take 12 split up over the day, I understand the daunting task it is, but, i saw it as a way to get water in. have you considered Rootine vitamins? you send in an update blood sample and they tailor your vitamin needs based upon your specific dna!

Jibbee im mostly vegetarian. Very little animal protein and certainly no 4 legged animals so no keto for me. I take magnesium at night already.
