Diana 1234's Journal, 02 August 2023

I'm trying to research something that Id like to get help with.. Ive recently heard that fruits high in sugars can be as bad as foods with refined sugar..In other words, it's stating that sugar is sugar once it breaks down in your body. I've always thought that natural sugars were better for you. Especially when you add the benefits of the vitamins , antioxidants, etc that they provide. I admit I don't usually eat a lot of fruits but not because of sugar content, mine is more about the carbs. Summer is heavier fruit consumption cuz of my love of watermelon and cherries..lol. What are your thoughts? Any links to new info is appreciated.🍓🍒🍎🍉🍑🍊🍍🍌🥭

Diana, you have a fantastic resource with your nutritionist, that’s where I’d start. There is so much contradictory info out there, she can point you towards the solid science.

maybe your local library has this book, 'The 150 Healthiest Foods on Earth' by Jonny Bowden? The book is divided into type of food and the fruit section is helpful.

Hi! I have a link to share with information about the sugar in fruits and how the body metabolizes it differently than added sugars due to it's fiber content. Enjoy some watermelon! the link: https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/is-fruit-good-or-bad-for-your-health

If all you are concerned about is weight loss and muscle building a carb is a carb. If you are more concerned about your bodies nutritional needs the answer is no. I log my foods on another app that breaks it down to micro nutrients and minerals which helps me keep it real.

Watermelon has only .4 grams of fiber per 2/3 cup... Due to its fructose content, it is considered high in FODMAPs, or fermentable short-chain carbohydrates. Eating high amounts of fructose can cause unpleasant digestive symptoms in individuals who cannot fully digest them, such as those with fructose malabsorption.

As a diabetic, any sugar, be it "natural" through fruit/plants, processed or artificial ALL affect my blood sugars. Granted not all to the same degree, but they do affect it. When first diagnosed, I was told to avoid fruit juices and stick with low carb fruit, such as berries. This also goes for vegetables. Ones grown in the ground for some reason are higher carb/sugar, and spike my sugars. Diabetes has opened my eyes more than any book, dietician or even doctor ever did. Each person's system reacts differently. I am no medical expert, just providing information what my body, my blood sugars have reacted or been affected by sugars.

Katsoli, it was my nutritionist who mentioned it to me but it was at end of our session and we didn't get to discuss it further. Since I'm only seeing her once a month, it's harder to have access to her. I'm really intrigued!

I'm glad to hear that nutritionists are finally catching on!

Also, Diana, that is what ALL carbs are when the body breaks them down - sugar. Sure, some have a lower glycemic index because of the fiber content, which means that it enters the system at a slower rate, but it still enters the system. The effects even "slow" carbs have on each individual person will vary because it depends on how sensitive they are to them, as in how their metabolic system handles them.

Diana, I'm curious what your concerns are....health, diabetes, building muscle?? I eat a lot of fruit. I start each day with a bowl of assorted choices. Usually watermelon base & I add seasonal choices. I eat a lot of strawberries & blueberries. Peaches & cherries in summer....pears & pomegranates in winter. About 75 -100 of my breakfast calories are fruit. I've never felt any adverse reaction. What carbs do you eat to fuel your workouts? I would think, since you work out almost daily you'd use the carbs in fruit.

Sherrye, I just find the topic very interesting as it goes against what we "normally" think. I'm most concerned about exercise and health. If I'm going to work out heavy or double up on a class, I definitely eat carbs before work out. I usually get my carbs from grains in the morning. Usually oatmeal or grits. I do sometimes include apples or berries in it. I eat cottage cheese or plain Greek yogurt sometimes too. A couple times a week I have protein shakes and will occasionally include an apple with that. Also eat eggs/ egg whites a couple times a week.

Zenus, carbabuser, honeybuns, and Jamms thanks for input and I will check out links. Zenus, my nutritionist has my daily WOE as follows, 100-125 grams of protein, 100 grams carbs, and 40-50 grams fat. She definitely isn't Keto but this WOE has worked for me.🩷

Hi Diana, How are you this is what I found: A study published in the journal "Nutrition & Metabolism" in 2015 found that fructose from fruit did not have the same negative effects on blood sugar levels as refined sugar. The study participants were given either a drink containing fructose from fruit or a drink containing refined sugar. The results showed that the fructose from fruit did not cause a significant increase in blood sugar levels, while the refined sugar did. Another study, published in the journal "The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" in 2017, found that fructose from fruit did not have the same negative effects on insulin resistance as refined sugar. The study participants were given either a diet high in fructose from fruit or a diet high in refined sugar. The results showed that the fructose from fruit did not cause a significant increase in insulin resistance, while the refined sugar did. A third study, published in the journal "Nature" in 2018, found that fructose from fruit was metabolized differently by the body than refined sugar. The study participants were given either a drink containing fructose from fruit or a drink containing refined sugar. The results showed that the fructose from fruit was absorbed more slowly by the body and did not cause the same spike in insulin levels as the refined sugar. These studies suggest that fructose from fruit may have different metabolic effects than refined sugar. However, more research is needed to confirm these findings. In addition to the studies mentioned above, there are a number of other factors that can affect how the body metabolizes sugar. These include the type of food that the sugar is consumed with, the overall diet, and the individual's genetics. It is important to note that even though fructose from fruit may have different metabolic effects than refined sugar, I would still be wary of when I consume my fruits. I would do it immediately after, during or immediately before my workouts that way I know the exercise will utilize the insulin spec correctly. Hope this helps :) On a personal note I eat fruit but only around my workouts.

Diana, I find it very interesting how fruits and veggies have changed over the centuries of domestication. I remember when I was a little girl, we had wild strawberries that grew in our yard. I would search for & eat them. They were about the size of a blueberry & had very little taste. Not sweet at all. https://youtu.be/YZEwgbPTT9E

Waynearends, your information is about the same as the info I found. It's also what I believed all this time. My nutritionist is super knowledgeable and is always researching new ideas. I respect her very much and know she wouldn't just throw out the information without doing research. That being said, I simply can't find data that says different than what you found. I'm reaching out to her but haven't gotten her yet. I love fruit but I do limit my intake to 1-2 servings a day .
