HealthyBabs's Journal, 10 October 2010

I am journaling with a tear in my eye this morning. I just realized it has been one year today that I almost lost my husband to seizures resulting from depleted potassium. He was in a coma for 3 weeks and from asthma complications, I almost lost him 2x. Together with that, I had previously made a committment that this was the weekend I was going to quit smoking, drinking and lose weight. WOW....all three at once, that was mighty risky.
I am thrilled to say I have been booze and cigarette free for one year as of today! I slept in a chair at my husbands bedside for two weeks and it was impossible to smoke or drink in the hospital. I had a leg up on those two committments. I didn't really eat for a month and lost 10 lbs. I was able to get into a pair of jeans I had't worn for years.
I am happy to say my husband is doing fine now after alot of therapy, changing his eating habits, etc. and Oh Yes, I regained those ten pounds. In June, I renewed my spirit around losing the weight and here I am 4 months later and 21 lbs lighter.
Wow, what a year it has been! I know God only puts upon you what he knows you can handle, boy he surely tested me this year! So, this is why I know I will make it to the top of this hill in my journey. Life is good for us and we are truly thankful and blessed.
Thanks for listening/reading, my tears have now turned to a smile of joy!!

*hugs* So happy to hear that both you and your hubby are doing better, Babs. My grandmother often told me growing up how she stopped smoking and it was a similar type of story, my grandfather had been diagnosed with colon cancer while all four of their children were still small. She said that she told God that if he pulled through she'd never smoke again. He did and she never had another cigarette for the rest of her life.

Your doing great. Smoking and drinking are both very hard things to give up. I've had family members who have quit one, or both of them. It made such a change in their lives, though sometimes that change came just a bit too late. I'm glad you made the descion to quit. Congratulations on all that you have acheived so far. I know that you can do anything that you put your mind to, just keep moving forward, one day at a time. :)

Babs, I'm so happy your husband is well now. Sometimes it takes things like that in life to make us realize where our true values lie. It's horrible while it's happening, but it puts everything good in our lives in perspective. You, your husband AND your renewed spirit have an absolutely glorious day!

Thanks all for reading my little story and for all the positive comments I received back. Kinda ironic, on my one year anniversary I end up with this chest cold. I have not been sick all year. Seems like the little guy is sitting on my shoulder with a reminder of why I quit smoking in the first place. Kismet I guess, well anyway two demond down and this last bastard isn't gonna get me! Watch out world-Here I come!!!!

That is amazing! Congrats!!! I'm an ex-smoker myself, & to conquer both quitting smoking AND drinking is really amazing! And what a blessing that he pulled through & is here to enjoy your new lifestyle with, right?? I'm sure that cold will pass quickly...that is actually what prompted me to quit. I'd had a cold a couple winters ago & when it went away the cough didn't. Then I caught another cold, so I ended up hacking for like a month. One day I realized I had a smoker's cough & that's when I knew it was time. Here's to us & our improved health!
