Ok, change of plan. I've been on a low carb diet for 5 days now, trying to keep it around 50 grams a day. I wasn't attempting ketosis, mostly trying to dump sugar and processed grains from my diet. It's been hell. I'm going through a lot of life changes recently ( moving to a new city, ending 35 year marriage, learning to live by myself which I've never done before) a lot of scary challenging things, and two things I really need right now are energy and a clear head. I have barely slept for 3 days. I didn't anticipate this side effect. I haven't been a great sleeper since menopause, but I could manage 5-6 hours a night. Now I'm lucky to get 3.
I read a journal recently, wish I could give credit but can't remember who it was (brain fog, remember) that said any successful diet had one thing in common which was sticking to mainly whole unprocessed food. I've been thinking about that ever since. It sounds too simple to be true. So I'm adding beans, brown rice, sweet potatoes etc., and staying away from as many boxes, bags and added sugars as I can, along with keeping overall calories reasonable (I'm starting at 1500) and exercising. Oh, and the wine stays for now. It just does. Also keeping the water at 1500-2000 ml a day. That's probably 3 times as much as I used to drink. It's kind of a pain, but I feel it's helping me overall.
I'm still feeling optimistic and learning something new about me and my poor old body every day. Hopefully I can reward it for suffering through all the french fry, cake, chip and candy binges and still being pretty healthy (no medications or chronic health problems, knock on wood).
Monday is weighing day, fingers crossed. Hopefully I can get some sleep before then. Happy weekend. Thanks for reading.
