IT professional living in Pittsburgh. Realized about a year ago that I needed to make a big change after smoking for 8 years and weighing in on the scale at around 270 pounds. A very good friend of mine almost lost his life during that time because he followed the same "diet" and smoking routine I did.

Started with quitting smoking but my weight jumped up so I decided I needed to add in a lot of exercise. After a few months I started to notice I was able run pretty well on the treadmill and became addicted. I'm now over a year smoke free and lost almost 70 pounds. I train for and participate in multiple races a year. My original goal was 198 but I'm looking more towards the line of 185 now.

Scheduled races in 2011:

DONE March 6th (5K) - Athletic Trainer River Run. Pittsburgh, PA. Time: 25:17
DONE April 10th (11.5 mile obstacle course) - Tough Mudder. Allentown, PA. Time: 3.5 hours
DONE April 16th (10K) - RiverSide Run. Pittsburgh, PA. Time: 53:22
DONE April 30th (5K) - RoundUp ReRun. Delmont, PA. Time: 26:49
DONE May 8th (5K) - 2011 Komen Pittsburgh Race for the Cure, Pittsburgh, PA. Time: 29:26
DONE May 15th (6.5 miles) - Pittsburgh Marathon Relay - Pittsburgh, PA. Time: 57:06
June 4th (5K obstacle course) - Warrior Dash. Logan, OH.
August 20th (Half Marathon Trail) - Race for Hunger - Freeport, PA.
September 25th (10K) - Dogfish Dash. Milton, DE.

Now living in Portland, ME. Still run, just not as much. Lifting much more and interested in the science behind muscle growth. Lover of all things beer, newly into photography, and a big time nerd.

Weight lifting and %RDI
I think it depends on your goal from the fasting. Personally, fasting that long of a period is something I could find hard to do, and could hurt your muscle gains. Something you might want to consider for fasting while maintaing muscle mass is Intermittent Fasting. There are many variations of this method of fasting. The main component being that you are fasted when you workout. In this case, your body will be in a state where it will burning fat. As with any diet or nutritional change, do some research and see which best fits your lifestyle. Here is a site for reference. www.leangains.com.

Does anyone here calculate macronutrients? If so, what percentage of macronutrients do you strive for when maintaining a caloric deficit?

Personally, I'm attempting to lose bodyweight, while retaining muscle mass to the best of my ability.

I'm going to strive for the following distributions of macronutrients:

50% protein 30% fat and 20% carbohydrate

Does anyone think that they will ever 'go off' their diet?
I don't think I'll ever stop getting a general idea of calories in my head, but I stopped tracking them exactly about 4-5 months ago. It was hard at first not to track the calories, but after doing it so long you can kind of guestimate where you are calorie-wise.

Warrior Dash- 5K
C25K is definitely the way to go! I did Tough Mudder back in April and I'm doing Warrior's Dash in a couple weeks in Ohio! Welcome to the mud run family, once you do one you'll be addicted!
