My name is Steve and I have been struggling with my weight my whole life. I've never been obese and I've never been thin, I've always been in-between. Now that I'm in my late 40s and recently remarried, I decided that it was time to get the weight off and keep it off. But, like before, I lost weight, became complacent, and gained it back.
Everything changed several years ago when I learned that I was a type II diabetic. It was time to make a permanent lifestyle change and finally do something about my weight and eating habits. My doctor put me on diabetic medication, but I wanted to do this without drugs! I told myself that I would control my diabetes with diet and exercise.
I had good success with low-carb (Atkins) about 10 years ago, and I read a lot of information that suggested that a low-carb lifestyle would control my blood sugars. So, in February 2011, I adopted a low-carb lifestyle and was 20 pounds lighter by the end of May. My blood sugar readings went from the 200 mg/dL range down to the 100 mg/dL range (my sugars were normal again!) My blood pressure was high too, and that came down as well... now I'm seeing normal blood pressure at or near 120/80 mmHg. And I went from a size 38 jean down to a size 32 jean which is where I am at now. Talk about a win-win-win scenario!
Here it is almost a year later and I've been able to maintain my initial weight loss. I'm loving the low-carb lifestyle as I continue to eat foods that I love... steak, chicken, seafood, salads, low-carb beer, and red wine. I still have about 20 pounds to go but I look and feel great. I know that by January 2013 that I will be at my goal weight and look even better. Thanks to low-carb I no longer take diabetic meds... and every morning I smile when I slip into my size 32 pants! :-)
