How can my body do this?
I didn't read through all of the responses here... but truthfully it wouldn't matter if I did. The answer is simple - you're gauging early success by the wrong measure.

When I started my weight loss journey 2 1/2 months ago, my weight was all over the place on the first week - or even two weeks and I didn't see any steady progress for quite a while. I had to just focus on what I knew would work - eat right (count EVERY calorie) and don't miss a day of exercise - don't let excuses get in the way - and don't get discouraged. I'm so glad I stuck with it as now I've only got 15 pounds to go till my goal.

Just believe in yourself and don't focus too much on your number early.

To protein shake or no protein shake?
I use EAS Vanilla Whey powder once every other day after taxing workouts. Sometimes I'll also mix the powder into fruit smoothies.

I agree with your initial thought that using it as a meal replacement may be an effective weight loss strategy, but it's not conducive to being a life style change.

For myself, I have committed to counting and recording every calorie using this site and an app on my Blackberry as my primary tools. So far, just lightly using whey, I'm close to 20 lbs lost and I'm just over a month in.
