Feel De-Railed
You have already taken the first step toards the goal, by posting in this forum and seeking help/advice. It sounds like mild depression or perhaps part of the menopausal imbalance. You should consult with the doctor, and start into an exercise that is easy to do - like walk in the park. Even once a week is better than nothing. 30 mins is better than nothing at all. I found my back pain reduced a lot when i did yoga atleast twice a week. Good luck to you.

sorry
The tough part of depression is that while one is inside it, its hard to do the stuff that will get one out of depression - like exercise, a walk in the park or seeking help and medication to get rid of it. It is a vicious cycle and i think only luck breaks severe depressive states. Please seek help from a doctor, and after some medication you will get to the park. Changing the routine you have now will also initiate something to break the cycle. good luck.

Laxative for weight loss
Yes it works - i have taken herbal medicine which is basically a laxative, as it would make me go, soon after i eat meals. But this was prescribed by doctor to have the right dosage, and was combined with another medicine, which boosted my strength to survive through the laxatives for 3 months. So, do it in moderation and you need to watch your diet too. Consulting a nutritionist should be your first step.

New beginning
best wishes. you can find the calorie details for yourself by reading articles online. It would be a good idea to consult with a nutritionist before you start on the journey, to avoid reading numerous hours on internet. If the biggest loser can do it, you can do it too.

I've been lurking, but now I'd like to ask for some advice
youcandoit said it well. Age is a factor, and i am in similar boat trying to lose weight. two big culprits are some kind of factor inside the body and not doing enough cardio exercises that takes away the fat. If you cut fat completely out of your diet, the body will start storing the fat that it can find in carbs. Macros have to be in proportion.
