Back Surgery
Hi,
I feel for you more than you know. I have alwasy been big, but running was my passion, trail running, road, what ever. I managed to get back into marathon shape and broke my foot, Jones Fracture - but it healed, I am 44. I taught high impact fitness class, weights and cycling for 13 years up until I was 42. In 2009 I could no longer take the pain, and could no longer walk.
After intensive steroid treatment (adding 30 pounds) and being immobile for over 6 weeks, I had abck surger on L4/L5. I was told I would never run again, as I still have bulding discs and - like everyone - degenerative arthritis.
Well, I love my wine and my food, and after surgery was not able to walk or drive for over two more months. Three months prior to being able to move about on my own. Now up over 40 pounds. Yippee. So, looking at 220+ on my 5'9 frame. Awesome. I went back to the club where I taught part time for 13 years, got "the look" - you know, where the give you the up and down with a raised eyebrow, and was told that I no longer had "the look" no were my classes still there for me to teach. Ouch. Luckily I still had my day job.
I started walking, and it bored me to tears. Cycling ws ok - but I missed teaching. I got laid off, and eventually found a new job that had a fitness center at the location. After getting that facility up and running, I was able to peel off 30 pounds kjwith working out non-impact and doing my own version of weight watchers.
I kept it up over teh summer, and was down to 180. I liked it there. I know that 165 is ideal with my muscle mass, but still...
That was 2010.
I still miss running. I would love to even jog....
New job stress began, teh company started to fail, politics and lay-off, 60 hour work weeks, solo mom of 2 teens, and I gained 20 back.
So - Zumba here I come, and hip hop for adults, and anything low-impact with loud music that takes my mind off the world like running did. I try to do trail walks at super speed, but nothing replaces it all the way. I am back on track iwth eating every 2 - 3 hours, mini meals, and backing off carbs. Of course, to really drop wieght I have to cut out the wine. Ugh. So, I found this web site, and have been able to drop 10. 4th of July week killed me, tequila, wine and the discovery of Micholob ultra light..... so this weekend I got back on track, I hope, and I weigh in tomorrow.
New goal: 165. I will do it.
Back surgery survivors.
It sucks to loose that freedom of burning calories and getting that runners high. But, it is AMAZING being able to walk when you almost couldnt.
Hang in ther eand DON'T DO WHAT I DID! it has been 2 1/2 years since surgery, and I am still trying to take off what I gained by being lame and eating and drinking what I did when I was running and burning those calories.

Why is it I am more hungry after I eat my meal than before? That is what makes not over-eating hard....
