I am a disabled military veteran with a war injury that I am going to have to live with. The VA put me on pain killers and I took them as prescribed for many many years, but there is only one problem with living on pain killers. You start to build a tolerance to them and need more and more until you detox or die.

The human body has so many defense mechanism and will also build a tolerance to pain if endured for a long enough time. I live in pain and so used to it that it does not bother me that much. However after being off the pain medication for 3 years my weight slowly increased. It is amazing how easy it is to gain weight when the stress and depression kicks in from such a drastic change in life style.

Before my injury my BMI was 14 and worked out every day (mostly cardio). Never in my wildest dreams could I ever imagine myself over 300lbs.

As the weight slowly but surely went up you never really weigh yourself unless you go to the doctor. You can tell by how tight your clothes get. Then you don't even look at yourself in the mirror and the state of denial starts to kick in.

The VA Weight Management Doctor asked me if I weigh myself at home. I said that I don't have a scale that will go over 300 lbs... and I thought that was the end of it. Was I wrong.

A few days later a scale was shipped to me and that was the slap in my face that said "No Excuses". I realized that if I can detox from oxycodone, morphine sulfate, and opana... I can step on the scale and face my real self and not run away from it.

That was the first step of my weight loss journey was to step on that scale and accept it. I don't have to like my physical condition but all I have to do is realize that "I AM IN CONTROL AND I CAN CONTROL MY DESTINY".

The VA "MOVE" weight loss program has really helped me and made the difference.

Anyone else got 60-70lbs to lose- also taking Orlistat
The VA weight management program I am in does offer orlistat for participants who are struggling to lose weight. When I first started the weight program, last October, the Physician offered diet pills or orlistat as an option. After hearing about all the side effects I declined and decided to lose the weight in a more natural way.

I have lost 70 lbs in last 5 months, but I started at a much higher weight. The more you weigh, the faster the weight loss can be at first.

I lost my weight by making some healthy changes. 1. I try to eat 25 grams of fiber every day, drink as much water as possible, be as active as I can (mostly walking every day), eating protein every meal, giving my body the nutrients it needs, staying away from foods that make me more hungry such as high salty content. And staying away from artificial sweeteners and diet soda's.

Going for bariatric surgery...
I was in a very similar situation. I am a disabled war veteran in the VA MOVE, weight loss program. If I could loose 10 percent of my weight I would be able to get the gastric sleeve surgery. The VA MOVE program wants to make sure you can follow the diet and changes that must take place before they invest in the surgery.
Only problem now is I do not qualify for the surgery. I have lost almost 20 percent of my weight. I went from 52 BMI to 40 BMI and lost 50 lbs in only 3 months. I am not complaining and happy that I do not have to have irreversible surgery. I am content that I will not have to experience acid reflux or have to take vitamin supplements for the rest of my life (side effects of having the gastric sleeve).
I'm not sure if they offer the same Intensive MOVE program for 8 weeks classes where you live but it was mandatory to attend these classes to have the gastric sleeve surgery. For 8 weeks I got counseling from Dieticians, Psychologist, Bariatric Physicians, and RN's.
The only reason why I started using the website is because my dietician and bariatric doctor want to monitor my diet/food intake. My dietician, Kelly, is the BEST. I'm sure she will probably see this comment and she wants me to increase my daily calories/RDI... but I do not want to eat if I am not hungry.
I was able to suppress/control my hunger by following all the advice Kelly gave me. It was not easy at first. The hardest part for me was to give up the diet soda's and artificial sweeteners. I started drinking lots of water and made sure I ate protein every meal. Adding lots of fiber to my diet was not that hard but increasing my activity was very difficult in the beginning.
It hurts like hell when i walk, but then again it hurts like hell when i don't walk. I used to walk with my cane and after I lost enough weight I realized I don't need it anymore.
But I have learned to control the pain as well as the hunger. Now, I don't believe in excuses and I don't believe in failure when it comes to health issues. I am very motivated to succeed because I was so miserable before. I was borderline diabetic and could not even reach over to tie my shoes.
I wish you the best success and hope this helps.

Is coke and sprite ZERO okay for Atkins?
I have lost 50lbs in last 3 months. If I had to put my finger on the one change I made that helped me lose so much weight was... Cutting out all diet soda and artificial sweeteners.

Why? Because my Dietician stated when you trick your body with artificial sweeteners and your body does not get the sugar it was expecting.... guess what... you get hungry again.

The body tells the brain your hungry because it lacks nutrition. When you ingest the things your body is not made for or wanting... you get hungry again. Unfortunately, the body cannot say exactly what your needs are like... I need carbs, or I need protien, or I need vitamin D. It only speaks by releasing a hormone called Ghrelin.

I have done Atkins diet a few times in the past and always lost weight with it; however, I have never been able to keep the weight off. I have known a lot of people who have also done Atkins diet and had the same results. It just seems so easy to shed the weight so fast with less effort. But for me it just seems to squeeze the liquid out of the fat cells like a sponge and the fat cells stay there and just wait for you to go back to a normal diet.
