January 2017 - I am in my mid-50s and would like to lose 40 to 50 pounds. This is the same 40 to 50 pounds I have been gaining and losing all my life. Now I'm starting to have some health problems, made worse by my weight. I really want to live an active lifestyle without pain. Losing weight and keeping it off is critical for me at this time in my life. I am on a low carb, high fiber, high protein diet of 1,500 calories or less per day. Glad to have a group of people with similar goals!

January 2018 - I reached my weight loss goals last year and now I'm facing the challenge of maintenance. Maintenance has always been difficult in the past, but so has significant weight loss. I managed to lose the weight, so maybe I can keep it off this time. I am determined but not naive. This will require vigilance.

what is your goal weight, 5'3 and 5'4 ladies?
I'm 5'4". I started at 196 and my original GW was 145 because I wanted to get into the healthy range on the BMI chart. After that, I just stayed on the same plan and continued to lose. My final goal weight was 125 but lately I have been staying around 120. I'm not changing my maintenance goal from 125. I think that's reasonable for my height and frame and I don't want to set myself up to fail at maintainance. If I had not continued to lose when I reached 145lbs. I would have been happy. Frankly, I look better at 145lbs. At my current weight I have a lot of loose skin. However, my body seemed to want to lose more. I had a lot of inflammation in my joints so my theory is that my body craved less weight on my frame. I have no idea if that's true, but I'm going with it! LOL!

If your metabolism slows down as you get older, do you need to do more to lose weight than a younger
Before we started our weight loss effort in January of last year, both my husband and I were told by 3 separate doctors that diet is 90% of weight loss success. That was good news because neither of us were in any shape to start a vigorous exercise routine. Just by eating healthy food and controlling our daily calories, we were able to consistently lose weight. Eventually, we added exercise (mostly walking) and are continuing to walk 6 days a week. I walk 3-4 miles and he walks 4-6. I also do some core exercises, and our doctors have suggested we add some strength training for our health. We are in our late 50's. I'm sure others may have found that exercise is more critical to their weight loss, but for us it was mostly food. Keeping a food diary was very helpful while we were losing. Good luck!

Looking for someone with similar statistics :)
That sounds a little thin to me. You are already at the bottom of your healthy BMI range. Concentrate on the health aspects of your life, not the physical. At that weight, I'm sure you already look great!

How fast is too fast?
As long as you are working with a doctor, I would think you are doing fine. I started my weight loss journey on January 1st of this year. Since I have actually stuck with it for so long (not my usual MO) I have found that after many months, I'm in better 'tune' with my body. Sometimes my calorie count gets low for a couple days, but then I can just feel that my body wants more calories and I increase them a little. My weight loss has been fairly steady and continues as I near my goal. Some days I eat a little more, other days less but I'm usually around 1,100 to 1,300 calories.

How Often Do you weigh yourself?
During my weight loss I have weighed in once a week. I try to make it consistent and prefer mid-week, but if I'm traveling that can change. Once I hit my goal weight, I plan to weigh 2-3 times per week for awhile. If I start to gain, I don't want to wait a whole week to find out.
